IkarusJohn Posted April 11, 2017 Share #441 Posted April 11, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been called all sorts of *ist over the years - pretty much water off a duck's back. The issue here is over how some see the future of the M system (reductio). I'm happy using all sorts of camera systems, but can only justify one or two. I love using the SWC and the M-A, and the SL is my current favourite camera; I don't see myself selling my Monochrom any time soon. But in choosing these camera systems, I looked at the system as a whole. The M system appeals because the aperture is on the lens barrel and the shutter speed top right. The M10 even has ISO top left (where is belongs, if you're a Nikon user). I would have bought an M camera years ago, had it occurred to me. In the interim years (after the death of the last of my FM2s), I went down the rabbit hole of increasingly complex electronic cameras and they took me further and further away from the photography I love and had experienced since childhood. I don't really see this discussion as being about video, so much as about the direction Leica has taken. On the one hand, many here hate the SL because it isn't like an M (too big, too heavy, too ugly), which is a very traditionalist view; but then, people are upset that the M10 drops what was a pretty poor video implementation from the M(240), accusing others of being "traditionalist". Isn't the underlying point that dropping video is seen as limiting the M and giving it a second ranking behind the SL? This seems dissonant to me, as the truth is that every digital iteration of the M camera has been an improvement on the one that went before, in terms of what the M does, and has always done - provide direct control for stills photography. This new M10 looks fantastic to me, and if Leica continues to produce M cameras with this maturity and clarity of focus, I will be very happy. Turn it into something else, and I won't be. An all singing, all dancing M camera won't be an M any more for me. I bought the M9 because the controls were where they should be, and there was nothing more than I needed (never used the Snapshot mode, and never used AWB). That's the appeal of the M. The SL does everything else, and if the M tries to become a mini SL, I won't be buying another. The M is special for what it is - the best at what it does. Advertisement Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 Hi IkarusJohn, Take a look here So how long before video capture functionality arrives?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Olsen Posted April 12, 2017 Share #442 Posted April 12, 2017 I'm torn over this one. A bit of me is SO pleased that Leica have made the M10 as it meets my photographic needs almost completely. But I also recognise that there's a significant community (of which I am member) who found the M-240's flexibility genuinely invaluable. I'll say goodbye to my M-240's with some regret. I also know that sod's law says that next month I'll get a commission which has a talking heads video element built into the brief! I'll then have to pick up a used M240 as I won't want to hump the 5D3 system around Bihar or wherever. A word of comfort - it's possible that the M-240 and M10 product lines will continue in production for the foreseeable future. If there continues to be demand for both of them there's no reason why Leica shouldn't do an M-240 mk2 with improved sensor. It would make commercial sense. What so good about M10? tsleica Posted April 12, 2017 Share #443 Posted April 12, 2017 If Leica were really cruel... They would increase the cost of the M10 to about $12K- per body..maybe up to 20K... And limit supply...like Patek and Rolex watches do... As in.. The people that buy the M10 would have no problem spending the cash..for a compact traditionalists camera..w/o video..as is indicated here in this thread..as it is the only digital stills only/no video rangefinder...which is highly desirable...much more so..than an M..w/video... Patek..has waiting lists for years..and will only sell some watches to certain individuals..they deem "appropriate" as legitimate buyers..with legitimate status and history with the company..or in the caste system.. This would work well for Leica too..as they wouldn't have to make so many cams to make the same profit margins..and increase the Leica "Myth" at the same time..increase photo gear desireability...and wouldn't have to repair so many cams either..which is a pita...shipping back and forth... and taking apart whole cam/replacing chip etc...lol... There is a waiting list over 200 deep at most Leica dealers right now..so some people..wont be getting their precious traditionalist cams..anytime soon.. ..who woulda thunk..just remove video..and start..a stampede.. ...but really... this is is a good business model for Leica..increase waiting times to 1 to 2 years..maybe more...cut back on production...and just let people sit..and stew...or...dream...w/credit card..in hand.. Wait..all they have to do..is change the pricing asap to much higher for the magic to begin......the wait times... are already there..lol..
lct Posted April 12, 2017 Share #444 Posted April 12, 2017 What about photography in this nightmare? The M was a tool, then a luxury toy, what will it become tomorrow? An adornment?
