A not-so-old but discontinued one. It was made for the Rollei 35RF film camera (essentially a Bessa R2) by Cosina, along with the Rollei Sonnar 40/2.8. A 50/1.8 was also planned but never saw the light of day. *HFT* coatings (a joint Rollei/Zeiss development) were applied in Germany, where final assembly also took place, so that these lenses could be marked as Made in Germany. In addition to their odd focal lengths, both the 40/2.8 and this 80/2.8 were rather expensive and had the Cosina look and feel of the time all over them... Unsurprisingly, they were a commercial failure: it seems that only slightly over 400 Sonnars (of which about 50 in black) and less than 100 Planars (about half black and half silver) were made.

M11 + 2003 Rollei Planar HFT 80/2.8 LTM, both wide open @ MFD (approx. 1.2m)

Same camera, lens and settings as above. Both handheld and fairly substantially cropped.
(and yes, I know I recently wrote that entomology is best left to the grown-ups, but sometimes I can't resist...😇

Rollei Planar HFT 80/2.8

I've kept a 'weather eye' out for one of these for years since I'm so fond of my Rollei 40/2.8 Sonnar HFT but they rarely come up so thank you for the pictures, Enrico.  The out-of-focus areas look gorgeous to me.

Pete.

You are most welcome, Pete. There are always a few of these 80/2.8 for sale, but their prices are primarily driven by rarity and have become eye-watering in the last few years. Although, with a bit of patience, they can still be had in mint condition for their launch price...😉 They are optically excellent lenses, with good (but not great) construction. I agree that their rendering is interesting, somewhat tamed and not as "biting" as one would expect from a modern Planar with modern coatings.

Here are a couple more wide open with the Rollei 80/2.8 LTM on the M11:

Lenses made for the Foth Derby range of folding cameras were designed to cover the 127 (30x40) film format, hence the absence of vignetting on FF.

M11M + converted 1934 Foth Anastigmat 35/2.5, 1st @ f/4 and 2nd wide open (and with a healthy dose of contrast added in post)
