shirubadanieru Posted April 20, 2020 Share #5663 Posted April 20, 2020 (edited) Just got a new toy; given I love Nikkor vintage glass on LTM, I thought about giving the Nikon rangefinders a try. Shot with the M10M and Nikkor 5cm f2 ltm focused to 0.5m at f4. Nikon S3 Black Paint & 50mm f1.4 (reissue edition) Welcome, dear visitor! The first shot was taken at 0.5m & f2; the Nikkor 50mm ltm lenses can be easily focused down to 0.5m with live view, such an ingenious way to do close ups, way better implemented than the Summicron DR...wonder why other makers don’t copy this. Yes, a wonderful Sonnar look. In order to be able to date your lens, this website might help:http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/serialno.html#RF_5cm But the reference information about all things Nikon RF can be found in Rotoloni's book:https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Nikon-Rangefinder-System/dp/1874031770 A few other lenses will enable you to focus closer than the rangefinder will allow, but not many. 2 hours ago, shirubadanieru said: Just got a new toy; given I love Nikkor vintage glass on LTM, I thought about giving the Nikon rangefinders a try. Nikon S3 Black Paint & 50mm f1.4 (reissue edition) Careful: that's a very nasty bug! 😉 You may find that the replica version (aka, "Millennium Edition") renders a tad too "modern", and you'll be looking for the original 1964 one (aka, "Olympic Edition"). Then you'll realise that, unlike the Nikkor HC 50/2, these are not Sonnars, and start investigating the earlier 50/1.4 Sonnar versions - and you'll *need* the creamy rendering of the original NKT "5005". And of course, you'll want one in S mount and one in LTM when possible... Oh, and what about the Nikkor 50/1.5? Now you won't be able to claim you have not been warned...😁 In order to stick to the thread's rules, here's one with my 2001 "Millennium" Nikkor 50/1.4 mounted on the M9M with an Amedeo adapter: Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! This is the most informative post ever on Nikon RF lenses! Thank you! My favorite lens for Leica are two Leicas & one Nikkor (Rigid 50mm cron, 35mm 8elements, and Nikkor-W 3.5 f1.8 ltm). But this Nikkor 5cm f2 I just purchased recently might end up replacing the 50mm collapsible I was using on the MM simply because of the rendering and close focus (such a joy to use and quite hard to find one in good condition these days). I spent a whole week thinking which one to get, the SP 2005 edition or the S3 2000, but in the end decided to go with the S3 due to the lens, since I already own the 3.5 f1.8 From what I read online it seems most people prefer the SP in general though mostly due to the viewfinder. I’m assuming the NKT 5005 is the Nokton 50mm f1.5 original? Here’s another photo with the 5cm f2 on the M10M 5

Seems like you already own a great selection of some of the best vintage glass available! The Nikkor 50/2 may well replace your collapsible Summicron, but as you have probably realised, they render quite differently: the Nikkor is a Sonnar, while the Summicron is a Gauss variant (actually a rather complex one). It's really down to which one you like best. Should you be interested, there is also an early collapsible Nikkor 50/2, which however does not focus as close as the rigid ones. As for "NKT 5005", sorry for being somewhat cryptic in my previous post. No, it's not the original Prominent Nokton 50/1.5 (another excellent lens btw, although the Prominent Ultron 50/2 is perhaps even better, but that's another story altogether): NKT is an abbreviation for Nippon Kogaku Tokyo, which is how early Nikons were labeled. Depending on when exactly they were made, some early post-WWII may also have been marked MIOJ (Made In Occupied Japan). After a short while, the label became Nippon Kogaku Japan, abbreviated as NKJ. Therefore, in a nutshell: NKT (whether it also bears the MIOJ marking or not) is earlier (and rarer) than NKJ. "5005" refers to the very first production batch of Nikkor 50/1.4 lenses, which serials all started with those 4 digits. IIRC, it is believed to contain a fairly substantial proportion of German (Schott) glass. A few subsequent batches were also labelled NKT, but with different serial sequences. The vast majority of the lenses produced, however, were later NKJ batches. Similarly, the serials of the first batch of Nikkor 50/2 lenses start with "5008". And here's one with a 1958 Nikkor 35/1.8 LTM on the M9M. Taken in Rome 6 years ago almost to the day. Welcome, dear visitor! Ecar Posted April 20, 2020 Share #5668 Posted April 20, 2020 M9M + NKT "5005" Nikkor 50/1.4 (taken several years ago, so should be from my 1950 S-mount copy with Amedeo adapter, not the LTM one) Not very appropriate for the season, I know, but it looks so much cooler than PPE...😉 Welcome, dear visitor!
