I sold the 28 Summicron !
I much prefer the smoothier rendering of the vintage lenses and of the 28 summilux !

Taken with a 28mm f6,3 Foca Oplar Leica M adapted on the M10M:

and the one below taken with an early 28 Elmarit M v2 on a MP 0,58 with TMax 400:

Thanks, makes sense 😊 I’ve really gotten into older lenses too.

Interesting thread. Yes I have some new super sharp M lenses, but these days I seem to gravitate toward older lenses. To me these seem to take on a look all their own especially when shot wide open. Trying out the 1956 Rigid 50/2.0 Summicron from the first batch of 1000 and find it is fun to use on the M11.

Gefällt mir sehr gut! Ich weiß gar nicht warum das Summar meistens so schlecht geredet wird!

Sorry, I forgot that I'm in the English forum: I like this picture a lot! I don't why so many people claim that the Summar would be a weak performer!

The LEICA SUMMAR 50mm f/2 is an extremely sharp lens in the center, and softer on the sides compared to LEICA's newest lenses. In most cases, no one will notice any difference since the sides are never in focus anyway most of the time. (Ken Rockwell)

Just messing about. One of these pictures is from a vintage lens and one is not, can you say which is which. This is photo number 1. It's not a scientific test.

Pictures taken at the Leica store in Sydney on 13 February 2023. Pictures were taken from approximately the same position but not exactly the same so that I can tell which is which. One picture is with a Leica IIIf and Summitar (coated with 10 aperture blades) and the other is a Leica M3 with a new copy of the 50 mm Summicron v5. I accept that for some a 50 summicron v5 is a vintage lens because of the date of design, which would make this two vintage lenses, but since it is still in production I consider it to be a current lens, especially since some vintage lenses have haze and other defects whereas a newly made lens will be free of those defects.

Tech: Focus was on the structure of the building opposite, with exposures made hand held at 1/500 and f8.0. Film was Ilford HP5+, the rolls are from the same bulk roll of film, they were developed at the same time in the same tank at 24 C using full strength XTOL for 6'15" and scanned using a Noritsu at 6000 x 4000 pixels on the same day, one after the other. Photos were not manipulated in any way except to resize them. They were not sharpened.

Summitar is #2 (the slight pincushion distortion gives it away).

The pictures below are from a lens that's perfectly calibrated but easily one of the most hard-to-focus ones that I own - at least wide open and close to the subject - due to it's ultra-thin DOF:

M10M + converted 193X Astro-Berlin Pan-Tachar 100/1.8, all wide open and with a good dose of contrast added in post

Also difficult to focus, but somewhat more manageable.

M10P ASC + converted (from Night Exakta) 1936 CZJ Biotar 80/2, both wide open @ MFD.

Despite my use of the EVF here, a very gentle breeze was enough to throw the "subjects" slightly oof...

Hi William,

I started this thread as a picture thread rather than to host discussions or arguments about the various merits of vintage and modern lenses so would you very kindly start your discussion in another thread please?

Pete.
