A lot of people have the perception that the Summar is a fairly soft lens, and while it is true that it is soft outside of the center I find it quite usable and sharp wide open. To showcase that here are to examples shot wide open at f2 and at f3.2. Camera used is the M9P. The main difference is the shape of th bokeh which between f2 and f2.8 is rounded and from f3.2 is not. You can see that difference in the door knob and again click on the images to see a sharper image

Summar example 2

F2 on top, f3.2 on bottom…to be honest it’s arms to tell them apart when you can’t see the shape of the bokeh, but f2 is slightly softer and the center area of sharpness is more reduced than at f32 as one would expect. Hope you found these useful!

Forgot to mention that this Summar is from 1934, Nickel, Uncoated, recently CLA'ed with very clean glass.

Hello,

does your Summar's  iris have  6  or 9 blades ? I read on another forum that there is a 9 blades version.

1934 Chrome Summar (6 blades iris) on M10M, exif says f2.8 but it might have been shot at f2

Mine has six. Never actually seen a 9 bladed one. Lovely picture, this lens looks great in black and white too :)

Shamelessly taking advantage of the cooperative resident hedgehog for comparison purposes (although it's fair to say that this is a "transition" or "Coburg" period CZJ Sonnar, and probably my worst copy of this lens, especially wide open)...

M10P ASC + 1946 CZJ Sonnar 50/1.5 LTM, first @ f/1.5 then at f/2.8

More hedgehog pictures (I don't have cats...), this time with a more recent lens.
