menos I M6 Posted February 5, 2013 Share #791 Posted February 5, 2013 Congrats! One of the finest short tele lenses of it's time and beyond. This is probably the best bang for the buck 80 Sonnar, one can mount on a Leica M. Great glass!
zombii Posted February 5, 2013 Share #792 Posted February 5, 2013 I agree with Dirk. The Nikkor 85/2 is an excellent lens for the price. Nice work with the Hologon, Dirk.
menos I M6 Posted February 5, 2013 Share #793 Posted February 5, 2013 Thanks Rod! I am loving this lens, having a blast, really. It just stands all conventions and rules, how to shoot upside down for me - starting from it's crazy design, how you operate it and how the photos look from it. It's a massive learning curve, I am biting into here - love it! I am not sure, I posted this one already, just popped onto my screen: Pentax 43 ƒ1.9 SMC Special in LTM mount - indeed a very special lens, super, super sharp and detailed (the Mono really reveals this), medium high contrast but very, very classic, super smooth out of focus rendering. The build quality is fine, but in my opinion, this very special lens would deserve a more hefty or even really classic build. I like the design of the focus mount too - really nice to work on, no hack job here. portrait - black frames and hair style by teknopunk.com, on Flickr

menos I M6 Posted February 5, 2013 Share #797 Posted February 5, 2013 Now THAT is a rare bird to see used Jeff - please share more ! Did you ever compare this and the later derived 16/8 Contax version? How did you process the shots, your's seem to be heavily de-vignettified (these extreme symmetrical lenses do produce natively very heavy vignetting on the digital sensors with a very distinct "cut off" border around the frame). I left the vignetting almost as is in my shots and look how I can incorporate this characteristics for future use. Fun lens indeed! The original 15/8 seems to have lower contrast and a more lovely softness to it than the more modern looking 16/8 version.
JeffoJeffo Posted February 5, 2013 Share #798 Posted February 5, 2013 There is not much processed done. Just use LR4 to change it to jpg. It seems that this 15/8 has less vignetting than on m9. My note book has no more battery. I will post more when back to HK as I'm in Thailand now for a short vacation before cny. I don't have the 16/8 so can't compare yet. Cheers, Jeff

menos I M6 Posted February 6, 2013 Share #800 Posted February 6, 2013 Jeff, it might make technical sense, as the Mono did away with Bayer filtration, so the sensor might be slightly more suitable to such extreme symmetric lens designs, as the Hologon, compared to the M9 sensor. I am now very interested in the exact design changes between the 15/8 3E and 16/8 5E designs, especially if there is a difference in design regarding back focus of the lens. It might well be, that these two lenses differ slightly, making a big difference in use with digital sensors. Your photos with the 15/8 make me suspect something going on about this.
