wlaidlaw Posted June 18, 2007 Share #22 Posted June 18, 2007 I didn't realise Ferraris came in a box. Shows you what a poor bloke newb I am. Sigh. I don't have a Ferrari either and for some strange reason my brother won't let me drive his 312 PB (the ex-Jacky Ickx one). Still it is proving to be about as reliable as a Noctilux. AlanG Posted June 18, 2007 Share #24 Posted June 18, 2007 Nice car. Here are a few photos for you. One is my client taking delivery of his 430 and struggling to get into a Lamborghini. (Even though it was brand new he had to visit it and wax it a few times when they were getting it ready for him. ) We do the web site for the local Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati dealer. He recently bought a convertible Gallardo which is what I'd go for if I ever lost my practical side and if you could consistently get above 25 mph on the roads around here. At least a convertible let's you relax in the sun when stuck in traffic. Just like being in your backyard. I made this joke ad to thank our clients for keeping us in the money. Life is tough... I understand that the Lamborghini suspension can be raised to clear speed bumps. I have a problem with them and driveways in my lowly Z4. The other shots are when I did a little F-1 photography. Montezemolo, Lauda, Regazoni. Sounds like a nice meal doesn't it? Good luck with the lens. Welcome, dear visitor! tjv Posted June 19, 2007 Share #25 Posted June 19, 2007 If my Nocti arrives and backfocus / frontfocus is a problem I'm giving up on Leica. It's amazing that I'm still devoted as I am. I think I've hung in because the people here have been a great help and very understanding of the trials I had with my M8 and repairs etc. Plus, I'd really like to support a company that I like. An underdog by today's standards. I don't think that makes me a smart person but I'm still in love with my M7 after three years and loved shooting with the M8 when I had it (even if the actual pictures looked awful...) So, as not to sound like this is a grumble, I love my Leica gear but have decided not to be so naive and romantic about my tools. I'm sticking to film these days but will get hold of a new Mamiya 7II while waiting for my Nocti. If the Nocti doesn't work properly my bank account will look a lot healthier. I paid for the lens last September. I'm appreciative of all the help I've got from the local guys over the last six months. They've been great. The problems I'm facing are no different to other stories I've heard the world over. And, ironicly, the delays people are facing for lenses and other products probably signal good times for Leica. Hopefully that can only mean good times for consumers soon.
richedg Posted June 19, 2007 Author Share #26 Posted June 19, 2007 Hi folks I have appreaciated the comments and humour! An update. I spent quite a bit of time readjusting the rangfinder focus to see if it was possible to have the Nocti and my other lens all focusing correctly. Sadly it is not possible. I have improved the Nocit focus: it now does an excellent job of getting the ears in focus if I focus on the eyes! When I first tested it was focusing behind the head. The other lens (35 f1.4, 90 f4 macro, 135 f2.8, etc work wonderfully). It has to go back to the factory. I am not aware of any technician in NZ who could adjust the lens. Is there anyone that anyone knows off a skillded technician in NZ? The analogy of a Ferarri that did not work is applicable: I have a top of the line very expensive lens, but it did not work at the shop, I agreed to pay because there was an outside chance I could correct the focus problem by adjusting the camera. Now I would be willing to pay a technician to fix a brand new expensive lens rather than send it back to Germany for many months. I must be mad. Or a Leicaphile, or something… I took some pictures with the Nocti last night. It fits my hand easily, it is so well balanced. I know it is considered heavy but it gives a great stability. I could achieve hand held shots in the lowest of light. I want, need, am down on my knees wanting this thing to work! Best wishes Richard
Eoin Posted June 19, 2007 Share #27 Posted June 19, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Richard, sorry to hear the only outcome is to send it back to Solms, let's hope they get it right and return it in perfect working order. I'd suggest enclosing examples of the backfocus and a detailed letter explaining the issues and securely attach them to the lens with rubber bands. That way they may be to hand when the lens is finally on the bench and there is no misunderstanding as to what the issues are. I am now pessimistic as to the accuracy of my own when it finally shows up, I have no intention of returning it for a lengthy repair, I personally think I have waited long enough for various issues associated with the M8 to be finally addressed and to have to wait again for further issues, it may very well be the straw that breaks the camels back. Obviously my frustration is starting to show and may very well prove to be unfounded, here's hoping.

Best wishes Richard Richard, In the same shoes as you, I decided against using a local technician, as although very good, he is not a great deal faster than Solms and just suppose it came back no better. You then send it to Solms and you get the plumber phenomenon "dear oh dear - who did this job then?" So I have very reluctantly waved bye-bye to my Nocti for some time. If it comes back wrong again, I will drive up to Solms (I want to see the Porsche and Mercedes museums anyway) and explain to them in terms they cannot mis-understand, that I am a very unhappy customer. Probably a difficult option in your case. Wilson
charlesphoto99 Posted June 19, 2007 Share #29 Posted June 19, 2007 Beats me too. My Nocti was 1.5 meters - yes 1.5 meters not 10.5 centimeters out at 8 meters after an expensive service and coding. You would be unhappy with a $5 Lomo lens being out that far. I can only assume that they are not being checked at all. An apprentice on day one should be able to spot that one. Wilson Considering my 28mm Summicron came back coded with a 24mm mount, they are definitely NOT checking the lenses as they leave the shop. Shame.
