In reference to adding a motor to early Ms...

"Be
very
careful with as the brass gears in the M3, M2 & M4 were designed with gentler, low-torque forces in mind. When the motor became available in the mid 70s, Leica had to use toughened steel gears to cope with higher internal stresses and torque during motor-driven winding. So by mounting a Rapidwinder or motor onto your M2/3/4, you can - if you are not careful - end up stripping your brass-gear camera and turning the innards to junk! "

Hi

The current Leicavit and winders (will) only work on M4-2 and later cameras, cause these late cameras have the coupling device, there may be problems with early M4-2, needing adjustment.

Some of the Canuck (3rd party) baseplate/levers will work on M2 but they were only made in limited numbers.

But you dont need a motor or base/lever worn brass gears can be 'stripped'.

The M2 (M4, M5 and early M4-2/M4-P) did not come with coated cover glass (like the MP and M7) but it included (they included) the condenser lens missing in M6 and some M4-P and some M4-2.

The M2 were cheaper, cause they were simpler, button rewind (you had to hold in), no self timer, no auto frame counter reset, simpler rfdr (but like the MPs) than the M3. Later production M2 have some of these upgraded. They all had depth of field notches in rfdr.

Think the MPs have a one way clutch in their rewind knob assembly that M2 and M3 lack...

Georg, the shutter got burnt at some point when I was shooting my last rolls of Kodachrome toward the end of last year. Don't know exactly when or how. It happened with the 50 Summilux mounted, as if that makes any difference.

Noel, thanks for the advice, but I've already taken it to Leica, who are replacing the shutter and giving the camera a complete overhaul. The fabric paint option would have been difficult because the hole was very close to the white metering spot. Still, it would have been doable and far cheaper than turning it over to Leica.

Just had an email from @stephens_leica. Something small, black and very sexy should arrive in Manchester tomorrow. :)

Either I was lucky and just got on the end of a batch, or Leica are batching M7s and MPs more often. Anyway, if it does come tomorrow that will have been almost exactly a month from ordering.

Well the fabric paint needs to be a thin as possible to get into the pin hole, and you should be able to get it in black or white, you only need a droplet into the hole, But you can even leave a black spot on the white spot, as in Blind Pew in RL Stevenson - Treasure Island.

If you carry the camera on a neck strap with a wide angle lens it is easy to do, again.

One more pic, and then that's enough camera porn for one afternoon... :)

Just playing around with it this lunchtime, and comparing with its much bigger brother the M7 with winder, it struck me that, although it's a fully manual camera, it's really a "shutter priority fully manual camera". The shutter dial is a lot easier to use on the M7, of course, so when in manual mode, either the aperture or the shutter speed dial can be adjusted with equal ease. That's not the case with the MP.

I'm looking forward to running some film through it later - it think that the first real shot should be of the long suffering Mrs B...
