I can confirm that my Sony FE 55/1.8 is a poor lens … contrary to many reviewers' opinions. The coma exhibited at full aperture is simply awful e.g. when photographing astro phenomena (stars) … but maybe I have a poor example? Leica R lenses likely have better coma correction so I'm planning to compare the results from the FE 55/1.8 and my ancient 50mm Summicron R Mk I when used with a Sony A7SII.

Just out of curiosity, how many FE-lenses have you actually used? You have shown your "tests" with Sony 24-70 in numerous threads already, but what about other lenses? You say that Sony FE lenses are "bit shit" so I guess you have tested all of them or at least very many of them to make such a statement. I know that there aren't many Leica SL-lenses to do comparisons with, certainly you have compared at least Sony GM 50mm to Sl 50mm and Sony GM 85mm to SL 90mm and so on.

There is no Sony G Master 50mm/1.4 FE. Here the Planar 50/1.4 FE vs. 50 Summilux-SL https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-883rLt/

Here more of the Planar 50/1.4 FE and the Sonnar 35/2.8 https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-Jfdr66/

Here starting to play with the 24-70/2.8 G Master https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-x8Mwmw/

And I own the Sonnar 55/1.8. Haven't compared it but as dunk mentions it doesn't live up to Leica standards. :)

They are all excellent lenses stopped down except the Sonnar 35/2.8 which even stopped down is a piece of crap. But wide open they are soft, most of them acceptably soft. The one I'm most disappointed in is the 24-70/2.8 G Master. At 24mm wide open it's utterly useless except in the very center.

In my experience, video shooters in the wedding industry almost never use Sony lenses. Most use Canon lenses (with adapters), or Sigma.

I asked a friend, and he told me that he once had a Sony lens split in half during a job. He was literally holding the front half of the lens in his hand while the back half was still connected to the camera. He now uses Canon zooms with a Metabones adapter, or cine lenses, on his Sony video camera.

This has nothing to do with image quality, I'm sure Sony's high-end "bokeh" lenses are as good as anybody's, but their bread-and-butter mid-range zooms leave something to be desired in terms of build quality.

No, no, I also heard that the S is coming this year. The person said something about 75 MPx in this respect. But the 40 referred to FF. It's either the SL2 or another version of the M.

I read you right the first time. If a FF Leica (assuming SL) is announced at Photokina, then I would expect an S announcement even sooner, or at least at the same time. Obviously it would be 60-80 MP at least.

I'm so bored with the whole 'more pixels' meme as well as with the 'leica is doomed' meme. Silly, useless, dumb things to debate.

Let's try to put our minds to better use.

Also, those M lenses are never going to work on a Nikon D850  :)

I hear 40 MPx FF sensor camera to be announced at the Photokina in September. I don’t know if it’s the SL2 or another version of the M.

Clearly, Leica will come out with new, higher-spec bodies. It's only a question of time  ;)...

The tech-spec-list of the Leica newcomers is typically below/after that of the big players, and the turn-over time for Leica products is generally longer than for Canikonsonyolyandtherest. That being said, the M8 was the first digital rangefinder and it remained unique for quite some years; the S was in front as a hand-holdable, digital 'medium format' system when it was released in 2006; the microlens array on the M-sensors introduced with the M240 are still unique; the two M-monochromes are unique for any FF systems (I believe); and the SL EVF was - and remains - at top among the EVFs out there. So there are important exceptions to the rule that Leica technology lags the competitors, and it would therefore be wrong to exclude surprises.

Irrespective of the tech-spec-list, the Leica optics rule. And the systems that I have experience with (M, SL, CL and S) feel, in general, like solid built and nicely designed instruments, not some plastic devices with far to many buttons.

Personally, I am curious about the next S and SL bodies. This doesn't mean that the existing systems are inferior for my use. But I would love to see higher-res sensor(s) that are matched to the already outstanding, high-resolving S- and L-lenses (as well as M- and R-optics, Zeiss lenses, etc.). If the Nikon D850-sensor is a guideline of what to approximately see in the next SL, we are in for very interesting times.

I strongly expect a new S to be announced, hopefully being released, in 2018. If a FF sensor is also being announced/released this year, I cannot imagine anything else than an SL2; the M-line has recently got it's M10.

The low light advantages of BSI sensors are more evident with smaller pixels as I understand it. With larger pixels the noise advantage isn’t as big. Therefore, if one has access to BSI technology and Leica presumably does now through TowerJazz one might as well move to 40+ MPx in FF as this is required today to stay in the megapixel marketing race. No need to stay behind the α7R III or the D850 sensors in MPx count with access to BSI. It could be a Q with interchangeable lenses or a Q2 with the 28 mm Summilux. It could be an M mount camera. All I know is it's planned to be announced at this year's Photokina and it's 40 MPx FF. And the S is definitely coming this year.

The forthcoming S has been made clear by djmay (Jesse) in the S forum, following his visit to Leica. He said as much without violating NDA. The only question on the S, or SL, both presumably with higher MP, is one of timing.

Jeff

I most certainly did not speak about a forthcoming S. Others have, but I have not. I have said that it is good to be in the S system. My remarks can be interpreted various ways, but it would be speculation.

No intent to misquote (I didn’t have time to find the exact discussion....please link if you find)...but yes, I interpreted it that S users would be happy and that you couldn’t say more. I can’t imagine any reason for future enthusiasm without some additions/improvements to the system. This was in the context, as I recall, of speculation about an S008 (and much negativity in related threads).

Since Leica rarely says anything about the S system, even when problems seem to warrant, or as competitors increasingly speak, we’re left to speculate.

I guess this is the post/thread you had in mind, Jeff.

Yes, thank you.

The first paragraph reads: “I have just returned from a couple of days in Wetzlar. I cannot provide details of the discussions due to confidentiality, however, I can say that more good things are happening and it is good to be in the S system.”

I’ll leave it to others to interpret, but this is more clear to me than any formal Leica communications I’ve read.

Hi Jeff,

Any information about the coming SF60 & SFC1 that you have and can reveal at this point?
