SL 50/1,4 data sheet online

Well it may be new on the website, but it was written in July.  It looks like the new lens is as good as it gets centrally from the widest aperture, even close up, and stopping down improves that edges a bit, although it is hard to tell how much of that is field of focus curvature.

The SL is digitally corrected, do these diagrams ignore this?

Since they no longer give the distortion and vignetting curves in the technical data, I presume that the document assumes they are corrected in the camera or in post-processing, following the instructions "baked into" the DNG file.  or in the final steps of creating an in-camera jpeg.

I'm more curious about the absence of the several pages of depth of field charts that used to be in these documents.  Especially since Peter Karbe has said that sharpness falloff in the new Summicron-SLs is tuned to be the same as in the Summilux.  So it would be interesting to see how they now specify depth of field.  Except they don't.

OK.

But shouldn't there also be a comparison with the Summilux M 50mm f/1.4 Aspheric?

As far as the MTF curves indicate, it appears that the Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 Aspheric is a bit better than its M brother and it has autofocus. If one would rather have better definition at the expense of being one stop slower, then the 50mm f/2.0 Summicron-M Aspheric might be a better choice.

Unfortunately, for the time being, one doesn't have the option of a 50mm f/2.0 Summicron-SL (with autofocus).

Wow, you guys are being really kind - did you notice the weight?  1.065 KG...!...  I knew the lens would be heavy, but hoped it would keep under .8 KG.  I knew that was unrealistic, but still hoped :)

I look forward to seeing how the Leica 50 Lux SL compares against the recent Sony 50/1.4 ZA for the A7 cameras.

50/2.0 AF would be my choice

Not clear where this lens would be worth carrying.  Yes, it is two stops faster, but the zoom has OIS.  So it is really a special effects (narrow field of focus) lens.  Taking portraits at f1.4 is not usually very useful, as only (part of) an eye will be in focus, so the field of application is narrower still.

Logically correct, but it doesn't seem to have held people back from the Noctilux :D

The SL system obviously is not designed to be light weight. It's not that it hasn't been figured out.

You can shoot M lenses on the SL or the M system for lighter weight and smaller size than what is offered by just about any FF system. It was figured out decades ago.

  • 2 weeks later...

...here's a quick comparison of Summulix-SL, Varia-Elamrit-SL @50mm, Summilux-M, Apo-Summicron-M 50mm and Otus 55mm.

My thoughts:

  • Summilux-SL looks very fine - except of 40 LP sagittal; what did Peter Karbe do there?
  • the Vario-Elmarit-SL is impressive

I think we will see real world examples in the next days.
