Leica M 10

If the M10 doesn't have a sensor at least as good as the SL's I'm cancelling my order. When we buy a digital camera we're paying for a life time supply of film. Each generation has to offer a step change in IQ along with other whistles and bells (unless the technology is completely saturated, and I don't think we're there yet).

So, yes, we've got an idea now off what the camera looks like, but the judgement won't come on until we know about iq across the iso range that matters to most real world photography. For me that's from 50 or 100 through to 6400.

The dxo comparison actually shows that the Q and SL have 1.5 to 2 stops higher dynamic range at ISO 3200 than the M (raw files, not jpeg) !

In my experience, the SL shows less noise than the M at higher ISO by about one stop. But this is not the whole story:

The SL files can be pushed further than the M files by approx. two stops at higher ISO. The M files are prone to banding, the SL files are not (since Firmware Update 2.0 or so).

With the M, I try to stay at ISO 1600 max. in order to have some room in post.

With the SL, I comfortably shoot at ISO 6400.

I agree that depending on the scene the noise advantage can be up to one stop. I don't care much for dynamic range, all modern cameras have enough of it for my needs.

But who cares?? Sorry Edward, do we want everything to look like it's HDR forced.

Not me...I'll pull the shadows a bit, if necessary and control the bright-bits in camera.

I'm just so over DR discussions.

all best, I mean no disrespect, cheers..

No offence David. I was talking specifically about noise not dynamic range. To be honest I prefer the M240 noise characteristics over the SL, but the banding is quite problematic sometimes.

Cheers Edward, all best..

must have misunderstood about noise and DR. But they are inextricably linked, eh.

Honestly there is enough DR with it's noise characteristics...plenty for processing and working any image surely.

who cares ? everybody !

If you get extra stops it doesn't look at all like HDR, you just get extra stops  and more possibilities

No, not me.  I'm not everybody.

cheers...

We are really here to talk of the brand new Leica, in a few days time... :p

FWIW, my autoISO limit on the M240 is 3200, and 12500 on the SL, as an indication of my perception of low light performance. However, I find that 12500, although allowing just about exposable images in the low light venues that I encounter, allow no latitude for motion stopping or greater DOF. So I would like better low light performance than the SL.

If I were a Leica industrial designer I would rip my hair out trying to please everyone on this forum.  :D

Perhaps already being bald is a prerequisite for working for Leica? (I can talk ;), wonder if Leica are hiring ).

Just checked and discovered that my M9 has auto ISO - I've never used it and never will :o .

Nobody on earth want less Dynamic Range  in a  new camera,  DR (or ISO capabilities) and HDR effect are totally different

If my contact is correct and it has a EVF then I will get it................my M lens inventory is back to where it was before so I might as well join the crowds and get one.....as long as it doesn't have the RF :)

you mean  built-in EVF or external EVF ?

built-in EVF I get it at once :-)

but I don' t believe, for M the M is half dead

The leaked photographs make it quite obvious that it has a rangefinder, as the rangefinder window is there. Which way the rangefinder system is implented is another matter. However, if it has indeeed the TL accessory EVF as everybody seems to think, I have a strong suspicscion that your contact is talking       ,sorry, ummm...misinformed.

I've been guessing it will be built in EVF for a while now, then it will be sort of another messsucher, in the combined sense. That would be a milestone, I guess.

Given it's looking like an old sensor, with no movies, and otherwise an old EVF, and not much new or anything to get excited about I hope it does have something like this.

Even still, personally I have no need for that, I would much rather a new cutting edge sensor.

It's the sort of thing I would find fun for the first bit and then 3 months later the novelty would wear off.

I hope the initial reports and reviews done by the testers like Jono and others will compare the sensor quality between M10 , M 240 and SL regarding to the DR, ISO and other details in their first reports. I am looking forward to hear from Jono on day 1  :)
