Flash Mount Viewfinder?

Searched the entire web with no answer. Maybe I'm using the wrong term. I see that some wide angle and telephoto lenses come with a flash shoe mounted viewfinder.

My question is when using one of these does the focus work the same way it does thru the normal viewfinder, ie split image?

Thanks

I'd say yes: the thing that clips onto the flash shoe contains the frame lines for its lens..since those frame lines are not available from the viewfinder in the camera body. I don't have any of those lenses so hopefully somebody will confirm.

The shoe accessory mounted viewers do work to frame the image; the rangefinder continues to work to focus.

I use viewfinders extensively for wide angle work and find them very handy.

As I said I don't have any such lens(es?) and I don't have an M8(.2) - but if I did attach, say a 21mm to an M8 and use the 'external' viewfinder would the frame lines be inaccurate due to the crop factor?

Sorry to confuse - just done some research and the Leica 21mm viewfinder, at least, contains lines for M8 too.

A 21mm external VF would show a 21mm field of view more or less whereas that of a 21mm lens would be 21 x 1.33 = 27.93mm on the M8 due to the crop factor.

What you'd need for this lens is a 28mm VF then. Or keep the 21mm VF and put a 16mm lens on the M8.

On the M 240, the electronic viewfinder also allow you to focus and set aperture while framing. But is the only one and only on the M 240 series and on. A non electronic viewfinder just allow you to frame, after you have focused and set the aperture in the rangefinder.
