Criticism and pleasant photography

It's so funny to see how some people try to explain other people what their motivation to show pictures in this place should be.

Because the mayority just want to post their pictures to have fun, show others beautiful landscapes they have seen on holiday, show them a pictures they are proud of for personal reasons and want legitimate confirmation etc.here should be room for them doing this without disturbance.

For the minority a separate category 'hard talk' should be opened. Rules there should be that hard constructive critics are expected by the picture posters. Competent slashers will be separated from disturbing trolls in this new place very soon.

Implementation shouldn't be much effort for the admin and ALL will be happy.

Best regards

Philip

Well said.

And I like your idea about the dedicated space for the hard critics and the poseurs.

........It is another form of dumbing down and watering down comments... who is the decision maker you Philip, Azzo, martinop I am sure the moderators have better things to do

point of view ... not as easily defined as point and view (shoot)

... trying to be more imants-like in my responses ... probably a little too coherent ;)

sometimes stuff sucks, sometimes it doesn't ... doesn't devalue the moment that one has chosen to record ... others are passionate about helping others reorder or better organize that moment ... better that than allowing one to simmer in indecision, incoherence or incontinence ...

Nobody's talking about moderation. We're talking about a place where the predators can go and practice their intellectual masturbation without the rest of us having to watch.

daniel.. what the hell did u say??

r u always such a fuckinh hero talking like this or only when u hide behind computer screen???

i will tell u about musturbation... grabbing a few super kitschy pics and welcoming with cute words a super cute comments. ah, and of course, masturbating when talking about equipment. leica equipment. resolution. mtf graf. fucking lines per milimeter. the differance between this or that model in depth. ah, and grabbing a few pics, just cutly and nicely. oh how cute it is. oh what a wonderful capture. oh what a masturbation of the ego. i have leica i have leica i make leica photography.

what a pitty that so many kitschy photographers (if many of them can be called photographers at all) hold such a beautiful photographic instrument as leica camera while at the same time, so many young and talanted photographers can only dream about it.

and what is like forum??? leica photographers represented by leica pornographers?????????????????

where are leica values, of creative and inovative photography etc etc??? in kitschy photos that are above a criticism?????? in people that call discusion about photography a masturbation only because it is not cute and not about equipment.

go and learn how to use your super camera. shame on u holding those cameras and not even being able to discuss photography.

Whoa there, whats that I see on your shoulder ? oh don/t worry it's only a chip.

Show me your best most perfect leica photo, I bet you I wont like it, why, we are all different, the only thing we have in common is eventual death, it's human nature and it's good, what I think is good others criticise, what others may think is good I don't, but hey thats course for life, if we all thought the same then there would be no need for debate, but if we must debate lets at least keep it civilized.

Well, I tell you vic vic,

The tone and style of this forum is pretty much the same as it was when I joined. I noticed you arrived at the party a year ago. If you hate it as much as you say you do, I wonder why you are still hanging around. Could it be because you actually enjoy posting your images and getting all the super cute comments? I haven't yet heard you complain about that.

I think that the title of this thread is fatally flawed; it should be titled "Pleasant Criticism, and Photography".

The arguments which have been boiling up on this, and other threads recently, are not about criticism (hopefully constructive) which none, save a few forum crap-shots, would object to; rather about the lack of basic good manners being displayed by a couple of individuals.

It is absolutely true that nobody is free of errors. But, consider this: Fifty people look at your photograph and there will be fifty different opinions of what is wrong and right with it. So if one person says, "You should have been more to the right," and another says, "You should have been more to the left." Then one more comes along and says, "No, they are both wrong. You should just crop the photo to the bottom of their feet." What good does all this do for you? How do you know who is right in order to apply it to your future experiences to improve your work?

Many times I have seen criticisms here discourage and confuse people, sometimes even making them not want to post images again. That is everyone's loss.

Just my opinion.

Regards,

If a photo is taken with intent, where the photographer actually moves around and decides what he wants, as opposed to a grab shot, then I don't think anyone else's opinion will alter the fact that for the photographer what he took was right for him - of course that shouldn't mean that others can't express their opinions as well.

I don't think I would ever say that a photograph should have been taken from a different viewpoint as I wasn't there at the time, but I do feel that stating your opinion about cropping is valid, as we all see things slightly differently and a crop that the actual photographer didn't think of or didn't see 'may' actually work better .

For me an example would be Marc's excellent 'FAST FOOD' photo, were I feel that if it was cropped on the left between where the blue wall ends and the metal shuttering starts - in the vertical dark area, it for me becomes a stronger photo. But that's my opinion, and Marc may have thought of that crop as well, and decided he liked it as presented.

I think that once past the basics, there is no right or wrong, just opinions, which should be allowed to be expressed, but in a polite and helpful way.

Regards

Bruno

Disclaimer:

The following is a persiflage, nothing for people taking nothing but warm

showers or hating Ironic statements !!! If you do not lik humor: Don´t read the following - NEVER!!

Dear Philip,

I propose just the other way round:

The superSOFT-Talk !

To create a little special forum for snapshots with value only for the

author-

There will be some buttons in addition for the author to click at the same

moment that he is posting the photo:

one for 5, one for 10 and one for 15 acclaims made by a smart program which

creates nice and convenient commentaries by a random generator with the

ellknown phrases as . The author has just to click on what he intended to

receive.

One of our members of the german forum (sorry, forgot who it was) made

already recently some good R&D-steps to feed the random generator:

Wonderful:

Wonderful light, tones, and composition.

Wonderful light, well composed. Your darkroom works pays off, great photo.

Wonderful tones, light, and composition. The artist who sculpted this piece

is obviously gifted!

Wonderful colours and framing.

Wonderful series... stunning pics.

Wonderful! Terrific colors, light, details and selective focus.

Wonderful color texture and compositions!

A perfect moment - wonderful timing.

My compliments for this wonderful shot!

That is a stunning image - so much character. The colours are wonderful and

the background is rendered beautifully. One in a million.

Exquisite shots, wonderful light, and elegant toning. Superb!

Perfect:

Perfect light captured, retaining excellent detail throughout.

A perfect moment - wonderful timing.

It's simply perfect!

Beautiful:

A beautiful photograph.

Beautiful capture of this wonderful place.

Lovley:

Lovely colours and wonderful detail. Very well seen.

Lovely view.

Further elements:

A terrific catch!

Fantastic!

Breath taking images!

Superb!

Thanks:

Thanks for pushing the level!

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for posting this.

creating a "Streichelzoo" like that would be fine for those who search just

some people to make them happy and hate to advance - there would not be any

problem because nobody with competence would disturb this narcism-corner

thus loosing time.

Everyman and everywoman would be happy.

And no Mod would be forced to losse his time either.

More than 15 or more extended positive comments (i.e. handmade instead by

the random generator) in this corner should be paid - thus funding some

money for this forum.

And I bet: This people WILL pay for that!

They can print a hardcopy, show it to everybody and be happy.

That´s what this forum is for, isn´t it? ;)

regards

Dirk

may be the high levels of photo-philosophy of this threat has reached, get me lost. According to I’ve read until now the private character of an image depends on how this image impacts in the sensitivity of the viewer more than its own condition. Then it is the subject who defines… Then the type of the population of viewers defines… Then we only know that we know nothing.:o

Can you help me?

Francisco.

you will never find a picture I did, that like to hurt the person in the picture.....it could be critical but thats o.k. for me, because it is honest!

..but why should I do "privat pictures" less "professional".. ..this would be like loosing the respect for the person..:)

Jan

I'll believe that someone doesn't want criticism when I see them admonish someone else for posting positive criticism of a photograph. Haven't seen it yet. I always feel that most people who say they don't want criticism are really saying that they only want people to post positive things.

Actually this is one of the best of the recent threads that I've read here - apart from the language in some of the posts that is <grin>
