Leica Q - AF issue

Hello fellow Leica Q owners

I seem to be unable to use my Leica Q in AF mode.

The MF sign is constant in the top right corner of the EVF/LCD and no matter what I choose in the Menu I am unable to activate AF. 

 

I am stuck and frustrated. User error or technical glitch?

 

Any ideas welcome

Could it be that your manual focus ring is not in AF position? If so, turn your focus ring until it clicks into the AF position.

Ditto. More than once I was in manual focus and didn't realize it. Try turning the focus ring then making certain it is in the locked AF position.

That cannot be changed in a menu. It's a lock on the focus ring.

As already mentioned by Flu ans infiniumguy, there is no glitch  or fault in the menue. Most of the time the one to blame is oneself. It happened to me more (!) than once that the AF ring was not properly in its lock. This is a thing you will learn to manage and if you leave the stadium of grappling with the handling you'll fell that this camera is a smooth and versatile tool.

I have had a few recent problems with autofocus. The first thing was that the autofocus looked like it was working, but somehow the image didn't look sharp enough once it had 'focussed', in camera. On checking the playback, the focus was off - every shot. The guy in the shop did a factory reset and it worked again. Not sure what he did. Took a while going through to re-set it all up again.

 

 The most recent issue was that I put AFL on the zoom crop button on the back of the camera in my user settings. Except, that it was not focus lock, it was actual focussing using that button and that button only (and not the shutter release button)! My fault, but somewhat different definitions to how Nikon, for example, work. Another trip up to the shop to get the camera back...

I had the same problem. Got the camera on a Friday and went on holiday on the Saturday so didn't have time to familiarise myself with the Q. The battery was almost out so thought it may be the lack of power causing the focussing error or possibly the camera not autofocussing at close range. Having now returned from holiday and going through the shots in Lightroom some frames are indeed well out of focus.

I have my zoom/focus lock set on AFL as I won't use the zoom function. Can you explain what you mean by it not being focus lock but actual focussing as I want to get to the bottom of this so it doesn't happen again. Do you mean autofocus is disabled using the button?

Addendum to last post.

 

Think I have found the answer. I must at some point have pressed the back button, and having previously assigned it to focus lock meant that it remained in that mode until I turned off the camera or pressed it again to exit the mode. One day was not enough time to aquaint myself with the feature.

I hadn't been checking on my posts and just saw this.

 

Basically, with other cameras the AFL lock means that once pressed the focus will be locked, but no other functions will be affected.

 

Not so here, as it stopped the shutter release button from focussing, however it appeared to be focussing (as it whirred and seemed to focus). My eyes are a bit dodgy so cannot see that acutely and a lot of shots were only a bit off, but enough to ruin the shot.

 

Turns out with that option on, the ONLY way of focussing is with that button. Which is fine as long as you know that and shoot accordingly!
