So what are your favourite lenses?

As a relative new guy to the rangefinder world, having only used a Yashica RF for a few months to get the hang of it, I'm finding the re-education on lenses to be a huge learning curve.

The question is nothing more than idle curiosity. I'm beginning to think the 28mm focal length isn't me but will persevere a bit longer, mostly because I like what comes out of the lens :) I know it makes no sense.

With all these Crons, Lux's, Version 3's and 4's etc I was wondering what your favourite lenses are and why?

I'll start, my favourite is the 28/2.8 Elmarit Asph because........(drumroll here)...it's my only lens.

All of my lenses are my favourites :p. But I have the Summicron 35 asph on most of the time and the 75 Summilux as long lens along. I like using the Zeiss 21 and the TeleElmar 135 and the CV 15 sees quite some use. I hardly ever use the MATE, the 24 or the 90/2.8. I might even consider selling some of that off.Or maybe not -undecided.

Right now it's a toss up betwen the 35 and 50 Cron. When I get my 75 back I think that lens will see some real action. Next in line would be the 24.

Although I have a 28/2.8 ASPH it rarely get put on the body.

Don't sell any Leica lenses. The minute you do you'll have a need for that focal lenght.

35mm .... in different flavours! Follwed by 50mm lux asph.

Anything wider is a waste for me ..... I never use my 21mm ASPH ... wonder why i bought it in the first place:rolleyes:

Lenses longer than 50mm are specialty lenses for me .. i own the 75 lux and 90 ME .. they have their applications but i use them very very seldom.

Thinking about it ... i could easily do with just a couple of 35 mm lenses ...:o

I like them all, but the lens that is on the camer a the most is the 35mm ASPH 'Cron, followed by the WATE. But this past weekend I was at a family gathering and wanted some closer shots and put on the 75mm CV, and for an hour or two it was my favorite. How does the song go, "love the one you're with". At this point the one I use the least is the 50mm 'Cron and that's the only one I'd consider selling. The one I use even less is the MA Tri-Elmar, which is having a summer vacation in New Jersey waiting to be coded.

I'm a fan of the 35mm A lux on the M film cameras. On the M8 I'm favouring the 28/2.8 Asph. My 35 A lux and 28mm A Cron are both in Solm, so will be interesting to see if the 28/2.8 stays top of the heap when the competition returns.

28 Cron Asph for (mildly) wide work, 35 Cron Asph for much stuff, 50 Lux Asph for everything I use it for, 75 Lux for portraits, 90 Macro for much stuff. There are too many good lenses to choose just one as my favorite yet. I do love that 50 Lux Asph, although I don't use it so much. I find it just a tad long. the 35 Cron Asph has probably been on my camera the most.

As this is the M8 Forum, I'm looking at my favorite on the M8. So far, it's the 24/2.8 ASPH, but I expect that one of the newest lenses in my collection: 28/2.8 ASPH or 50/1.4 ASPH will take its place. And I too love the 35 'crons: ASPH and v4.

My faves are the lenses I actually own! After all I can actually use them.

On the M8 I have a nice little kit of 5 CV lenses and I'd put the 75/2.5 Color-Heliar high up on my list. My most recent acquisition is the 21/4 Color Skopar and I rather like it as well.

my favorite is the one on the camera for sure! my recently acquired 24/2.8 asph is absolutely blowing my mind with it's corner to corner sharpness and I like the FL on the M8. The 28/2.8 asph is just a great walk around lens. The CV15 is spectacular on the M8. and on and on...the 50/1.4 asph, definitely my favorite, when it's on the camera, so I'm back to where I started. ;>) best....Peter

oh, did I mention the 75 lux, what a portrait lens, and the 90/2.8 is a joy to use...... how lucky are we to have such fine tools!

Well, it all depends on what you're taking pictures of...

Since I do mostly portraits, I often trade absolute contrast for other qualities...I love them all--just like kids--but...

I love the FOV and the lower contrast of the CV 28 1,9

The 35 Summilux ASPH is always on the camera. It's one of the best lenses I've ever seen, period. So much so that I don't feel slighted in the slightest using it as a 50. It's wonderfully people friendly opened up; stopped down it's sharp as razor blades.

Finally, I next reach for the 75 Lux, the older Canadian version... much like the 35, but wonderful compression (not too much, not too little) and a classic portrait FOV on the M8.

Can't go wrong with any of those.

I guess, in retrospect, I really like the look of fast lenses. They have tradeoffs that are very pleasing to my eye, at least when Leica designs them :)

I have a Noctilux on order for the same reasons ;)

I started with a Noctilux, 35 Summ. and 21mm Elm. on a M7.

After I sold the M7 and bought the M8 I use the 35 the most and for landscapes the 21. Therefore I sold the Nocti last week and ordered a 75 Summ. (on it's way !:D ) for portraits and the CV 15 and 12 for (dramatic) landscapes (also on it's way).

I'm curious if I will use the 21 in the future with this setup.

When I had a Nikon SLR outfit for 20 odd years, my lenses ranged from 28mm up to 600mm but the ones used the most were, in order, 50, 135 and 28. The others rarely saw the light of day. So when I converted to rangefinders, I immediately bought 28, 50 and 90 lenses. But on the advice of others I got a 35mm,( the CV Ultron) and over time this has become by far my preferred focal length. So I've just "upgraded" to a Hexanon 35 F2 UC. I have a sneaking feeling this is going to become my alltime favourite lens.

And you didn't even mention the 35 cron ASPH. If I had to have only one lens, that would be it--small, sharp, great focal length for general use.

My overall favorite lens, whether on the M8 or one of the film M bodies, is the 50 lux ASPH. That thing is just amazing and has the most beautiful bokeh.
