I'm still in Victoria and can only say what a great organizer we have in John, had we had the challenge a day later it would have

been Nikonos time.

It  would be a terrific idea to have Antipodean Challenges more often and regular meetings over coffee would fit in well with my

retired status. Anything to get the Grump out of the house Elizabeth says.

Thanks so much John and Melanie for all your work in organising such a great meeting.

Regards

Philip

Well, my Australia experience was surprisingly rainy (and pretty stormy), but living in a city, where we have 200 different words for rain, I can handle this. I assume, that rain counts as "good weather" anyhow, at least in the outback.

If I would be living there, I'd take part in a regular Australian One Challenge, especially, since flying appears to be like taking the bus somewhere else (I flew MEL-SYD-MEL with Tigerair).

I wonder, whether Bill Palmer knows, what he has done, when he came up with the One Challenge...

Thanks again to Melanie and John, to all other participants and the Australians I met during my trip - this was a phantastic experience *.

Stefan

* If I'm slightly over the top here, please attibute it to the side-effects of being a bit sleep-deprived, having just rolled out of the plane...

Looks like everyone had a great time.

You know a lot of wedding photographers who can be challenged to adapt...

Now that's a really good idea. My daughter's 21st is two and a half years away so I'll be right for the next one.

Andy,

John will correct me I hope but I think 26 registered for the Challenge and 30 for dinner of which 10 travelled from Europe.  It should be noted that since Australia is such a large country/continent that a number of the 'local' participants travelled quite some distance too.

Pete.

Edit: Cross-posted with Christoph's.

Stefan, remember rain is only liquid sunshine.

I envy you having just rolled off the plane. We're in the Singapore Airlines lounge in Melbourne waiting to board. I've been tucking into the "medicine" hoping it will help the flight pass quicker. Australia to Europe is a two hangover flight.

Pete, what date have you set for the Queenstown challenge. Sorry we missed you on Saturday night but trust you had a good flight home.

Cheers, Tom

If enough people are interested in the next Australasian One Challenge in Sydney in 2018, or perhaps 2019 if it too soon for some of those who want to return from the Northern Hemisphere, I'd be happy to organise it.

Sydney obviously speaks for itself but I'll also mention Newcastle as an option.

It is only a few hours north of Sydney (train or car) and very photogenic for day and night photography:

Working port with sea walls, beaches (and surfing), old 1920s sea baths and pools.

Interesting and beautifully preserved Civic centre architecture (incl gardens and sculptures/fountains, surprisingly good albeit small art gallerys, interesting post WWII architecture library, unusual town hall, etc).

Lovely parks and lookouts.

Two old fort and bunker systems on the hills.

The old centre of the city has both restored and somewhat derelict areas of older buildings.  Retail centre of town has impressive architecture from late 1800s/early 1900s demonstrating the wealth this sea port used to generate. Some of these buildings have been restored/converted for residential accommodation but many others are slowly decaying in the struggling retail town centre (Banks, etc) now the city no longer generate enough wealth to support their use and maintenance.

Good cafe and restaurant areas for street photography, and some quirky little shops.

So it's got landscape/seascape, industrial, architectural, grunge & decay galore, street photography - something for everyone!

MOST IMPORTANTLY OF ALL OF THESE ARE FOUNND WITHIN A VERY SHORT WALKING DISTANCE OF EACH OTHER, nice central accommodation is cheap compared with Sydney, and there are now excellent restaurants and cafes as Newcastle is experiencing some urban renewal as it offers a good quality of life much cheaper than the big cities.

Tom,

Steady on there.  I've merely suggested Queenstown as a possible venue for the 2019 Australasian Challenge - if there's appetite for one.  Previous suggestions I've heard were Taiwan or North Korea (although I don't recall who suggested the latter B)).  I'm not clear about the process for selecting dates and venues etc for the Australasian Challenges - so far it's been achieved by individuals putting their hands up.

I had a loo-oong but uneventful flight home thanks and I hope yours is comfortable and suitably eased by copious doses of 'medicine'.

I'm also looking forwards to it moving back to the Asian side of Australasia ;) Taiwan or Hong Kong could both be interesting locations. Actually i would love to go to North Korea as well, although that's probably not as practical :)

Newcastle sounds interesting, Mark.  I believe that following Tokyo the idea was to run an Australasian One Challenge every 2 years so April/May 2019 would be the next.

If Ozzie members are looking for the first venue for a 2-yearly Australian One Challenge starting in 2018 then might Newcastle be a starter perhaps?

Hi Simon

Taipei would give me a slight local advantage, I've been there more than a dozend times, although my locations specialized in hotel and conference rooms plus airports; few photo locations could be more boring.

I've thrown some of the social pictures above in this thread and have distributed some from my trip, where I found them most appropriate. Will add some more in the next days.

Hi Tom,

keep in mind the time zone shift is two hours shorter due to Australia having went to winter and Europe to summer time during our trip. I also find it easier going into the western direction. Still -9 instead of -11 hrs in your case...

Hi Christoph,

I fully agree about the culinary merits of Australia.

Safe travels back home everyone, who is not back yet

Stefan

This sounds like a cracker Mark. Thanks for suggesting it.

I've not been to Newcastle but would be very open to exploring a less well known but potentially great location like the one you describe. I'm sure there are other forumites whose curiosity would be piqued by the same.

Good morning/evening everyone!

My feet have just hit the ground after an outback sojourn immediately following the Challenge. I have had no internet or phone connection for about a week (relief) as a consequence. I am just unpacking and cleaning the car etc.

I have made a quick scan of earlier posts and I thank posters for all those complimentary remarks about the organizing and running of the Challenge. I do have a bad habit of getting lucky, rather than having any talent. I was particularly lucky to have Melanie organize everything to do with numbers. I will shortly post details on where to send Challenge entries and I may start a post Challenge display thread for anyone interested, if no one beats me to it.

More to follow soon.

Thank you to ALL competitors and partners for making the event sooo good by your participation.
