Dan, I haven't been to it for some time. I was a little ambivalent at the time.

It is not walking distance, but a short tram ride will get you there. It could be smart to tie a visit in after we visit Camera Clinic. In the same direction.

There are currently some very promising photography exhibitions that will be running during the Challenge. I will re-post those detail closer to the time. Actually, we are getting close now!

QUICK UPDATE

Currently I have 22 starters for the Challenge and 28 for the dinner.

Late starters for the Challenge will be OK, up until lunchtime on sat 8, but I will be finalizing reservations for dinner this coming week and paying the deposit, so late thinkers, commit and let me know about dinner. The odd late one will probably not matter, but I don't want to mess with the restaurant arrangements too much.

This PDF is my updated list of acceptances.

Please check that I have you correctly entered. Let me know of any omissions and/or mistakes.

LOCAL INFO

This site will give you a good intro to three high profile photo exhibitions that will be running whilst you are in Melbourne.

In fact the whole of NGV is a fabulous hunting ground for photographers.

More on this later.

Michael's looks like a handy shop - I see they also stock film. Related to places in walking distance from where we are based, I came across this:

The Centre for Contemporary Photography

http://www.ccp.org.au/

John, have you been and if so, what were your thoughts?

Hi Dan,

Not sure if you'll mind me adding to what John said about the CCP (Centre For Contemporary Photography) but - it is very much what it says, with a major emphasis on Contemporary. Much of the work there is ideas-based and esoteric. A look at the website will give you a pretty good idea, but I'd add that there is seldom what I'd call "traditional" photography shown there. Having said that, it is an incredible resource for Melbourne - they often have artist talks (I met Martin Parr there) and the teachers/workshops are second to none - among those I have attended are excellent workshops by Les Walkling and Jesse Marlow. Worth a look, for sure, and just a nice space to dwell for a while.

Oh, and Michaels is a very good store, BTW. A good place to get film developed, aside from anything else.

ANOTHER UPDATE

I just found this link to RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) photography school. It has been operating for 130 years and is currently mounting an exhibition of student works covering that period.

Definitely worth a look when you are here.

I have regrets and apologies as my brother in law has a 50th down the coast and is expecting me.

Count me out for dinner and the Sat get together in.

You will be missed. Enjoy the family occasion.

Don't forget to vote when the competition is displayed.

You already in Aus Stefan? I'm presently charging batteries and packing my camera bag as we leave tomorrow. Staying at Heathrow tomorrow night and then flying out Monday morning. Look forward to seeing you at 6 o'clock, in the lobby of the Travelodge Hotel on the Thursday evening before the challenge. Enjoy your time before then.

Cheers, Tom

Can't remember. Tom, are you and Eileen transiting straight through Melb to Tassie, or will you be spending some early time in Melb?

Let me know if you will be around.

Travel safely and well.

We get into Melbourne early Tuesday evening, stay at an airport hotel and then have a flight to Hobart around 08:30 on Wednesday morning. We then get back into Melbourne early Thursday afternoon just before the challenge. Look forward to seeing you.

Cheers, Tom

My flights are booked with Singapore Air: I touch down at 09.00 on Monday 3rd April and away again at midnight on 10th April.

There were much cheaper flights available through Qantas, Etihad, and Emirates but flying through Abu Dhabi or Dubai meant that my iPad and my cameras would have to travel in the hold on the return flight to Heathrow. And that wasn't going to happen in case they went into the hold but didn't come out again.

Pete.

Ah ... so it's true that alcohol distorts your memory.   Happy to buy you both a Real Ale in "Straya" although it might be difficult to find one at room temperature.  You might have to make do with an ice-cold VB. (Sip, ahhh ...)

Pete.

Last but not least: would you recommend we have Velcro soled shoes, or magnetic soles to make sure we don't fall off the earth?

Having done some scouting, I can confirm that everything is the same in this respect; to compensate for the other hemisphere, motorcars are simply driven on the other side. I remember this effect from RSA and Botswana  ( ;) ).

I'm sure you will manage, though :)

I have also trouble to find Polaris in the night sky. There is a cross for compensation, though ( ;) )
