John, I wish you a long life.

I'm getting accustomed to being an orphan and have my first motherless Mother's Day approaching.

I am still to process my one shot before this Sunday.

Cheers

We who are still online salute you

I've finally started to have a look at my photos from Australia. It's been awhile, but the fond memories of the LUF gang, especially the hospitality of John and Melanie. Here's a few snaps from the dinner.

Thanks a lot, Dan.

By the way, should we start to poll ideas for an Australasiansomewhereelse challenge, maybe 2019?

Stefan

I've heard of ideas of another one in a different corner of Australia or New Zealand. That may jbe the Southern Hemisphere locals setting something up. Others have suggested New York which isn't Australia-Asia, but I'd definitely be up for that - perhaps an American Leica group/LHSA would join-in. A local contact can really make a special occasion as we have seen in both Japan and Australia, but I would not the lack of a local eliminate a location.

There are many, many places in Asia that I have not been and would love to go. What are your ideas?

The issue is I have too many ideas :)

New York would be brilliant, we have very active members there. I met Stuart and Ben, when I traveled there in 2009. If one can't find a good view there, one should quit taking pictures ;)

In the US, I would also see San Francisco, Denver, Seattle and Austin* as good locations, if you like to add a quirky twist, also Las Vegas. I'm still interested to see New Orleans and Chicago. I've been to Detroit in 2003 but have been told it has improved very much since then.

I've never been to Boston but have been told it should be brilliant. Just over the border is Montréal, which is anyhow on my list and I can recommend Vancouver.

Places in Asia I know to be good locations would be, for example, Nagasaki, Hanoi, Saigon, Hoi An, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taipei, Penang. Singapore still has some interesting corners as well.

Further options in Australia - I found the light in Broken Hill brilliant, with Silverton as an almost-ghost-city close by. Ballarat is also worth a visit. Sydney is of course an obvious option. I have missed New Zealand completely so far.

* We would get 20 pictures from a 6th street bar with life music as night challenge entries.

Broke hill would be interesting - never been there.

I'd earlier suggested Newcastle, somewhere about page 19. It's certainly easy to get to...

If enough people are interested in the next Australasian One Challenge in Sydney in 2018, or perhaps 2019 if it too soon for some of those who want to return from the Northern Hemisphere, I'd be happy to organise it.

Sydney obviously speaks for itself but I'll also mention Newcastle as an option.

It is only a few hours north of Sydney (train or car) and very photogenic for day and night photography:

Working port with sea walls, beaches (and surfing), old 1920s sea baths and pools.

Interesting and beautifully preserved Civic centre architecture (incl gardens and sculptures/fountains, surprisingly good albeit small art gallerys, interesting post WWII architecture library, unusual town hall, etc).

Lovely parks and lookouts.

Two old fort and bunker systems on the hills.

The old centre of the city has both restored and somewhat derelict areas of older buildings.  Retail centre of town has impressive architecture from late 1800s/early 1900s demonstrating the wealth this sea port used to generate. Some of these buildings have been restored/converted for residential accommodation but many others are slowly decaying in the struggling retail town centre (Banks, etc) now the city no longer generate enough wealth to support their use and maintenance.

Good cafe and restaurant areas for street photography, and some quirky little shops.

So it's got landscape/seascape, industrial, architectural, grunge & decay galore, street photography - something for everyone!

MOST IMPORTANTLY OF ALL OF THESE ARE FOUNND WITHIN A VERY SHORT WALKING DISTANCE OF EACH OTHER, nice central accommodation is cheap compared with Sydney, and there are now excellent restaurants and cafes as Newcastle is experiencing some urban renewal as it offers a good quality of life much cheaper than the big cities.

Mark
