Hello everyone, I am new to Leica. I purchased a second hand MP 240 digital camera. I rented the latest version of a Summicron 35 mm for a week to play around with. I like to buy a lens but instead of purchasing a recent or newer style lens, I am leaning towards some older versions and I would/could need some help with that please.

I found a few examples that are in the $500 to $1500 range  and I am curious what you think of them and if you had a chance to use them before.

- Leica ELMAR-M 50mm f/2.8 MF $500.00

- Leica Summicron-M 50mm f/2 V4 Lens $600

- Leica 40mm f2.0 Summicron-C Lens $700

- Leica 35mm f2 Summicron-M ASPH Lens non 6-bit $1500

- Leica 28mm f2.8 Elmarit-M Asph 6-Bit Lens $1500

Can I use collapse lenses?

Thank you for any advice.

Robert

All of these lenses are just fine - I have all of them except the 50 mm Summicron and cannot say a word against any of them.  And yes you can use collapsible lenses (mount and unmount extended)

Welcome to Leica world.

From your list I have used

- Leica 40mm f2.0 Summicron-C Lens (still have and love the tiny size. f/2 is little soft but it is sharp sharp when stopped down)

- Leica 28mm f2.8 Elmarit-M Asph 6-Bit Lens (loved it but sold later for cron. Now miss it.)

Have fun shooting.

I have used all of them except the 35cron ASPH.

The 40cron would be my favourite. It is as small and light as the collapsible lenses, and it renders better to my eyes compared to the 50 Elmar.

The 50cron 4 is optically the same as the later 5, and is an excellent lens. It has about the same character as the 40cron, but with more contrast and overall sharpness. Because i like using a tab, I even like it more than the version 5.

The 28mm Elmarit ASPH is excellent, one of the sharpest lenses. I used it a lot on my M8, but on the M9 I either go wider or to the 40cron.

It also gives a more modern look, which is not always a good thing IMO.

The combination of older glass with modern digital bodies has something that appeals to me.

You'll be happy with that lens.

A V4 for $600?  I haven't seen one that cheap in the last 10 years unless it had some major glass problems.  I haven't even seen a V3 (11817) lately for $600 unless it was beat to hell.

You are right, the V4 looks too cheap, the 40cron C too expensive to me.

- Leica ELMAR-M 50mm f/2.8 MF >>>> I don't have this lens. So, no comment.

Leica Summicron-M 50mm f/2 V4 Lens >>>> Good lens, sharp. Mine is the Made in Germany version. It has a focus tab on it which I like. I use this Summicron lens a lot, have been using this in parallel to my 50 mm f/1.4 Summilux-M ASAP which is much heavier.

- Leica 40mm f2.0 Summicron-C Lens >>>> I don't have this lens. So, no comment.

- Leica 35mm f2 Summicron-M ASPH >>>> Also a good and sharp lens. But I spend more time with 50 mm nowadays. So, I have not been using this 35 mm lens lately.

- Leica 28mm f2.8 Elmarit-M Asph 6-Bit Lens >>>> Light weight, sharp lens without blocking viewfinder. I bought this lens because of its weight. I don't need a 28mm f/2.0 Summicron or f/1.4 Summilux; both are more expensive and heavier to carry around.

Good luck.
