bill vann Posted June 10, 2007 Share #1 Posted June 10, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) hi all, still recovering from th last round of spnal surgery, they've fixed S1- L-1. surgeons told my wife if i don't change, a lot, i'll enjoy life from a chair with big wheels. one of the spinal surgeons is a good friend and said if you can't change hobbies for God's sake and your own sell all your camera gear and buy the best SMALL two lens kit you can find. max 4 lbs said the spinal damage much worse than expected the oly is looking very very good a 3 lb kit, the M tags in at a bit over 6 keeping a minimum of required glass and selling the other half. keep trying to sort an approprite lens kit but 6-8 lbs is closer to the maker. may not seem like much but my back is way past salvage even Ga sent me a file and this week with SLR/c and Oly i'll print it up but if i can pull an 11x14 to 13x19 from the oly i think i'm set. the other recovery project is sorting 4 years of digital images. i have some magnificent images from the original rebel and the slr/c is killer,, quirks and all. never took a shine to the 5D and few shots have made the "fine art" file, no 20Ds. the M8 is a nose behind the kodak but the glass, ahh the glass. probably the best of the bunch by a good margin. still no hurry to sell the M8kit (can't pack it up any way but will likely spring for and try the oly 510 need the anti-shake) and give it a whirl. back in 35mm they made quite exceptional glass themselves. had my wife caryy it the 50ft i can wal and took a couple shots, don't think i could ever give up photography, doing it about 50 years now. anyway on the mend but it will be a slow one this time and i hope to be shooting by the autumn. nice to look in at the board and see my old friends. thank you all for the kind notes and comment sent my way. kindly bill vann

george + Posted June 10, 2007 Share #2 Posted June 10, 2007 Good to read you are on the mend Bill. Best wishes for a fast recovery. As we used to say in the late sixties: hang in there baby . . . .
martinb Posted June 10, 2007 Share #3 Posted June 10, 2007 Best wishes for fast recovery from me too! Regarding the 4/3 system, the glass really is AMAZING! The zooms have incredibly low distortion and if you can live with a small viewfinder the E-510 is a nice, full featured DSLR with live view, anti dust and anti shake. Oly 4/3 glass definetely is as good as Leica glass.
topoxforddoc Posted June 10, 2007 Share #4 Posted June 10, 2007 Bill, Like all of us here, I'm very pleased that you're recovering from your recenty op. Before you make any rash moves to sell kit, I would just take time to recover and see how you feel. I can't believe that H C-B's kit weighed more than about 3lb! Your M8 and 28/35 can't weigh much more than that surely!! You don't want to be carrying large bags with lots of kit - so just travel really light - your M8, one lens and enjoy! If needs be, put another lens in your jacket pocket. Carrying heavy bags can be bad especially if it is not a balanced load, but carry it on your person and the load is evenly balanced and ok. Best wishes, Charlie

innerimager Posted June 10, 2007 Share #7 Posted June 10, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Bill- I'm glad to hear you've gotten past the surgery. Using your recovery time to sort through and work with your images sounds like a great idea. I often feel much of the work, and art, of digital photography gets lost simply because it's so hard to keep up with all the images, and so much fun to capture new ones. I say, really go for it, makes lot's of prints, experiment with the digital darkroom, fill your, and other's homes up with your lovely work! best....Peter

sean_reid Posted June 10, 2007 Share #9 Posted June 10, 2007 Hi Bill, Good to hear from you. If you switch to just the CV Skopar lenses with the M8, you could be down to a very light kit. Cheers, Sean

bill vann Posted June 10, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted June 10, 2007 actuallty started with an M6 and mostly CV lenses replaceing with specials like the 4th ver pre asph 35 cron, 75 lux... the real compounding problem is i shattered my back, shoulder and right leg in nam andhave such tremors i drop things all the time as well, so chnging lenses gets quite involved, sit on ground putout cloth carefully change manage to stand up, an effort in itself, sometimes literaly 5 -10 minutes take 10 minutes for the shakes from the stress of standing up to subside, then try to shoot. not looking for sympathy but may need to take a different path, there are many paths to the way as my jindoshi once said, if one path closes look to another. i decent camera 1 excellent zoom and print smaller pictures. if things don't sort themselves i'll find another path. you are all good folk here and just dropping in always raises my curiosity. warmly bill if things don't change i'v got from 12 mm to 135, the tri elmar and the wate on order will be quuite a nifty sale or package for someone. ChrisC Posted June 10, 2007 Share #14 Posted June 10, 2007 Bill - I can't advise you on your camera, but here is a cautionary tale about perception: Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were camped in a Forest clearing. Holmes, the lighter sleeper of the two woke after a few hours and nudged his faithful companion. " Watson " he said " look up and tell me what you see ". " I see millions of stars, Holmes " replied Watson. " And what do you deduce from that? " Watson carefully considered his response before replying: " Well, Astronomically, it tells me there are millions of planets and galaxies_ Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo_ Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three_ Meteorologically, I suspect that tomorrow will be a beautiful day_ Theologically, I see that God is all powerful and we are a small and insignificant part of his universe...............What does it tell you, Holmes? ". Holmes broods for a while. Then bellows- " Watson, you idiot_ Someone has stolen our tent! ". Hope that helps....................Chris
carstenw Posted June 10, 2007 Share #15 Posted June 10, 2007 Bill, I hope you get better fast. As far as a camera goes, I cannot hope to help you make that descision, but perhaps it would be salient to remember that Henri Cartier-Bresson made a decent career on nothing but a Leica M and a 50 Summicron. One could do worse. In the case of the M8, that would probably be an M8 and a 35/2 Asph, or a 35/2 IV. Nothing more.
wparsonsgisnet Posted June 11, 2007 Share #16 Posted June 11, 2007 Bill, I noted your post yesterday, with joy. Congratulations to the end of your visit to the spa. I spoke of you to my wife and we both send our good wishes. We both have had recoveries during the recent past and hope yours goes well -- surely the goal of making pix will hasten this process. Leica's are nice to look at, as well as to use. I just got the CV15 and echo Sean's comment on lightness with the M8 (or other M's). Joe Mondello Posted June 11, 2007 Share #17 Posted June 11, 2007 Hi Bill, Good to hear from you. If you switch to just the CV Skopar lenses with the M8, you could be down to a very light kit. spylaw4 Posted June 11, 2007 Share #18 Posted June 11, 2007 Bill - as someone who is also recovering from (considerably less serious) surgery and slowly regaining mobility, I feel for you and send you my very best wishes. Hang in there, do what the surgeon and physios tell you and you'll gradually improve! Photographically speaking - there's nothing in the weight difference (appr. 80g) between the M8, the L1, and the Oly 510 bodies. Given the lens changing difficulty I can understand the wish for a single zoom lens. But it is a bulky package and the L1 with kit zoom lens is appr. 2lb 9 oz. Seems to me the advice re the M8 maybe worth a try first. Of course you could always try a D2!
grober Posted June 11, 2007 Share #19 Posted June 11, 2007 Best wishes for a complete recovery! Based on our current travails with the M8's lousy color balance and after considering all the hours I labor in front of a keyboard instead of behind the camera's viewfinder, why not consider a D-LUX 3 and list all the M8 gear on eBay? This idea has a growing appeal... -g
sean_reid Posted June 11, 2007 Share #20 Posted June 11, 2007 Doing everything with the D-Lux 3 might have some appeal. If working with the M8, you might consider using just one small Skopar lens each day - no switching lenses. Fortunately, there are a lot of good cameras one could use successfully. Cheers, Sean
