Lens hood on a 3m old 50mm Summilux - Kaput for the sake of a 1p grub screw

So not impressed with this 3 month old lens.

 

The complete lack of engineering in attaching the hood to the body is staggering.

it simply popped off while extending ?

It was fine one minute and the next thing I know, the hood is on the floor, with the grub screw nowhere to be seen.

I suggest that you apply loctite to the replacement grub screw! That said, I've had mine a few years without anything loosening. Sounds like the grub screw simply wasn't tightened up sufficiently and finally worked loose - irritating to say the least.

Yes. It's the current chrome lens with the extending hood... that extends right off the body

Have the patents on the Zeiss bayonet hood expired yet ?

The Zeiss design is so superior to all of Leica's attempts at hood design over the years.

Is it? I bought a 35 1.4 ZM and hood, which locked on and damaged the spring wires inside it. The dealer said Zeiss were extremely unhelpful about any replacement. It was extremely difficult to separate lens and hood but I think I was offered a refund on the item. (The lens I found too heavy so I sold it quite quickly.)

The grub screw is probably in that drain below the camera.

 

There are times when I think Leica qc must be a joke.

Since the M8, Leica seem determined to become the Ikea of camera manufacturers.

My black copy from 2005 has a recessed screw head at 180° from the white dot of the lens barrel. Seems fixed solidly but two screws would be more secure i suspect.

Unbelievable! I would assume that this should be fixed under warranty? Ideally with a sincere apology.

It's best to only buy Leica lenses that are more than 30 years old. It's the only way to ensure the "teething" problems have been dealt with.

It will be covered under the warranty and my dealer has passed on my email to him, with the photo above, to Leica Mayfair.

 

If they can send me a screw, I will fit it myself. I don't want to be without the lens for weeks

Hello Everybody,

 

One problem with finding replacement screws, etc is that sometimes Manufacturers make parts like screws to "proprietary standards". This sometimes means that the Manufacturer chooses a non-standard diameter, pitch, etc & then makes the parts to that different standard. This means that you generally have to get replacement parts from them & often can't find them in your local Hardware Store.

 

In terms of fitting the hood securely: It would be better if the hood were fitted with 3 screws, not 1 or 2 because with 3 screws: If 1 falls out there are still 2 screws which is sufficient to hold the hood securely until a replacement screw is obtained & fitted.

 

In place of "Loctite" it is perfectly acceptable to use some Nail Polish which is soluble in Acetone. Colored nail polish if you want to see it. Clear if you want it unseen. Acetone soluble so that it stays permanently & still allows you to take it out later.

 

Whether using Loctite or Nail Polish: It is only necessary to use a little bit up at the top under the head of the screw & a little more just below that near the head of the screw on the threads/shank.

Sorry to hear. Just checked my silver 50mm which is two years old and the retaining screw is on the bottom of barrel not top as yours.. Wonder when/why they changed.

 

Good luck with getting it sorted quickly. I have a cheepo E-bay vented silver screw- on (to filter threads) you are welcome to borrow - could be with you Tuesday.

The screw fixes into a socket at the bottom of the lens. The black dot you can see in my photo is the aperture marker.

 

I have temporarily refitted the hood by using a screw from the hinge of a cheap pair of reading glasses. It's not a proper fit, but does hold the hood. I haven't tightened it very much.
