Close enough?

Someone on the old forum once asked me how close I get to these things.....

These two were taken from the same spot today, first one with D2 at 1/2000th second, the next one with the V-Lux1 at 1/1000th second. The cars were moving at around 100-110mph, which explains why there is some un-sharpness (if that isn't a word, it should be :)). They were also LOUD. There's not a lot of time to think about composition, reciprocity failure or crossed-curves (before the RPS judges step in here;)).

The answer to the question is: if I got any closer, I'd be in the car. :D:D

Pete,

Did you feel like Louis Klementaski standing on the kerb side. Great shots. It's a shame that political correctness strops many people getting too close. I suppose the nearest thing we still have are the TT races in the Isle of Man.

Charlie,

When I started taking photos at this circuit there was hardly any Armco and lots of very big trees which folks could (and did) bump into. These days it is certainly very much safer for competitors and spectators, however, in those days it was not unusual for 40k folks to turn up for a big meeting and stand behind the picket fences; these days they might pull in 15k to stand behind the high wire mesh fences- of course there are more alternative attractions/diversion/pastimes too. One think I've learned is that faster does not necessarily mean better racing. :)

This is the only place at Oulton where it is possible to get so close (the estate boundary wall is 3m behind, or this would have been altered too). I found one place at Le Mans where the same car/snapper relationship is possible (I'm not going to tell you exactly where, or "they" will change it). :D

Pete,

I used to be one of the medics at Oulton, either in the medic room or in the response vehicle at the rear of the straight. i used to take pics with my Pentax MX off the armco by the pit lane were great. Can't find them to hand now as I took them years ago. May have to rummage around
