In addition to all of the above, you might try making two small accordian folds (crimps) to the first 1.5 cm of the film leader. This seems to grab hold of the film sprocket more effectively. I picked this up from a forum thread a year or two ago.

Im a bit am pm about the fold, it still has to drag back across the pressure plate shutter curtain gap on rewind, and I am sure whether it makes no difference at all when the film leader is inserted adequately into the pick up spool. Maybe the kink doesnt make the difference in itself, but just ensures you insert the film properly? Dunno.

When I bought a new M6 a few months back and having heard all the horror stories about loading problems, I sat down with the manual and just carefully followed the instructions. A piece of cake. But I was bought up on manual cameras and the golden rule allways was, " if the rewind knob is turning, she's a goer". In more than 30 years I've never lost a film by just following that simple rule.

My last film SLR is a Contax 167 (sorry, Zeiss lens :o ). One just drops a film in and some small Japanese robot will thread it in. Despite this perfection, I haven't used it for years but took the Olympus XA instead, although it is more difficult to load and operate. The only 35mm camera I have used in the last two years or so is the M3.

Sorry, this is just the M way, there are lots of things which can go wrong, so one better does things properly. This effort is excused by the result when everything is done correctly. I find perfection boring and M's genially quaint. However I don't expect everyone to agree.

Zen or the art of loading a Leica M.

Guest Bastian A.

if you are used to the leica film loading system it is as easy as every other camera. after 3 films at least.

i have never had any problems loading my m6 ttl and m2 (which has an older system).

1. The end of the film should be pushed under the strap at least until it shows under all dots of the arrow.

2. The spooling direction of the camera spool is reverse to the direction of the cartridge spool.

3. Both spools should be put in the camera as shown.

5. The camera spool should be pushed down until it snaps in its transport shaft. Both spools should look as shown in their final position.

6. The film should be advanced until the sprocket holes of the film align with the transport sprocket.

7. The winder can be pulled out and turned to tighten the film. The inner shaft (marked with a off-centre red dot) should turn when the film is advanced. To be on the safe side, I ‘waste’ image 1 too (I rarely use all exposures of a roll anyhow). I don’t have the ambition to get 38 images from a 36 image roll ;)

Thank you for proving my point Stefan.

The Leica M loading system is primitive.

By the time you Leica M film loading experts remove the bottom plate and find some where to put it.

I have opened and placed my film roll home and closed door on my Leica R's.

Cheers.
