I don't think the R to L adapter passes aperture settings to the SL. According to AlanYMW; it's the focal length and the lens identification that gets passed.

It is the R cam which mechanically transmitted the aperture to the R3 to R9.

ROM gives other information.

Even if there was the same receiving cam on the R-Adapter as there was inside the R3-R9 bodies lens mount, I don't see how it could transmit the aperture to the SL.

The R ROM were never designed to do that.

The R to L adapter definitely does not provide any aperture reading on the SL. This is also the case with the M to L adapter. Only the focal length and lens id information is provided. Even the focal length information is limited. When I was using the 70--180mm f2.8 APO lens on the SL using the said adapter, the SL could not tell if I was at 180mm or 70mm.

With other zooms (21-35, 35-70, 28-90, don't know which versions of these) there have been reports of the actual focal length being reported, but not for the 70-180.  Is it an older design?

Yes, it was designed before ROM. It could be upgraded with ROM but was only transmitting 70mm whatever the focal in actual use.

This was not a problem with R8-R9 because the only use of the focal knowledge was for the flash head to zoom.

For your information, my 70-180 comes originally with ROM.

Yes but it was not originally designed with ROM.

Which means there was no electronics embedded in the zooming ring.

On the plus side it is the only Vario that could be upgraded to ROM, but on the minus side it could not transfer anything else than the minimum focal length (70mm).

The only tele Vario which could transmit the focal length in use was the Vario-Elmar 80-200/f4.
