Jeff S Posted January 18, 2018 Share #1941 Posted January 18, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Of course. If the gear dictated results, we’d all produce the same. How boring that would be. Even the most devoted and successful artists go through dry spells and doubts. I learned many lessons owning multiple systems and formats in my film days, from 35mm to 8x10. That’s a signifcant reason why an M (and now an MM) and 3 lenses have sufficed since my digital transition 9 years ago. And it’s why I don’t mind taking years if necessary (yes, even occasional practical testing) to decide if additional new gear can meaningfully support or add to my goals and needs. I could afford to buy multiple systems again, but that would do more harm than good. No rush... plenty of pics out there. Jeff
Advertisement Posted January 18, 2018 Posted January 18, 2018 Hi Jeff S, Take a look here Leica SL or Hasselblad X1D. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Paul J Posted January 18, 2018 Share #1942 Posted January 18, 2018 The thing is the goal posts are constantly shifting. You are alway wanting more from your work. You are always changing, re-evaluating what's important to you, what isn't, and it's very difficult to get everything you want in every shot. You never really fail you are always learning. I've probably learned the best things from my worst mistakes. I think it's impossible, at least for me, not to hate my work sometimes. I don't think that's a bad thing.
Jeff S Posted February 26, 2018 Share #1943 Posted February 26, 2018 X1D price at B&H just dropped to $6495, which is $2500 under launch price. I handled one today at a local dealer. Sweet machine, much improved via FW updates. Still need to download some casual snaps using the 45 and 90. As an aside, the dealer was enthusiastic about the neat battery engagement, unaware that it was used on the S many years ago, and now the SL. Same system of battery engagement is used on my Stihl leaf blower and many other appliances. I was referring to the battery lock and release mechanism, which provides for partial, then full release by pressing the battery in (can't accidentally fall out after pressing eject switch, nor eject by accidentally pushing on battery), is weather sealed on the inside perimeter, and sits flush with the base. Unlike most cameras with a separate battery door. I don't think other tools or appliances feature all these aspects together. Jeff Once this pricing drop filters to Australia I think I’m in. I’ve been playing with a few MF options and bought a Pentax 645D as an interim measure because the price was right, I thought shooting CCD again would be fun for a while and I did not like the handling on the Fuji GFX. Don’t get me wrong, the GFX looks like a wonderful system, but being used to the SL the Fuji ergonomics are grating. While the SL and its stunning range of lenses remains my flexible workhorse system, the little Hasselblad is playing on my mind as a fun addition to my arsenal... it helps that the body is so beautiful. I am not a working photographer, so the process of making photos is as important to me as the output (which, frankly, is good enough for me from almost all modern cameras). As I have explored the options and visited shops to handle different cameras I have formed the view that the SL and X1D have much in common from the perspective that their industrial design aesthetic far exceeds any other current option in their respective FF and MF slots. FlashGordonPhotography Posted February 28, 2018 Share #1947 Posted February 28, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Alistair and any one else in Oz, Always keep an eye on the CR Kennedy website. Sometimes they have specials. They sell direct and ship overnight. I saved 40-50% on the HC lenses I got. That's where you'll see the price drop come through. Also, if we can find someone with a GFX we could get the Sydney guys and gals together for a play. Bring your own beers and memory cards. I have the other systems, plus most of the available lens adaptors for each system I own. Gordon

Hard to say if the price reduction will spread, or even last. The dealer near me (who stocks only one or two X1D bodies at a time) said that he thought B&H had received a load of them and could just be looking to temporarily reduce stock. I'm going to wait until the 35-75 zoom (roughly 28-60 in 35mm equivalent) appears, possibly not until Q3, and compare it to handling the SL and 24-90. I revisited the SL combo at my closest dealer today, and remembered its size and heft. The X1D and 90 was much easier to handle, so it will be interesting to see if the zoom is anywhere close in handling. And I'll be interested in the lens roadmap for the X1D and the SL beyond current announcements, especially whether there will be any more XCD zooms forthcoming, as the CEO indicated some time ago (right after another Hasselblad rep claimed a zoom for the X1D was not possible). It would be nice to have a compact MF kit with only 2-3 zooms covering a decent spread of focal lengths, without the size and weight of the SL zoom trio. Unfortunately, I'm told the forthcoming XCD zoom will not have OIS. BTW, I also took the GFX off my list after some brief testing. Nice system, but I didn't bond with it like the Hasselblad or Leica. Alistairm Posted March 4, 2018 Share #1949 Posted March 4, 2018 Nobody locally could go near the price, so I have pulled the trigger on a 4116 edition with 45mm lens from BH. Which lens should I buy next?
Jeff S Posted March 4, 2018 Share #1950 Posted March 4, 2018 None unless and until your work and your needs dictate. Good to use just one lens with a new camera system....or sometimes even an old one. Jeff
Alistairm Posted March 4, 2018 Share #1951 Posted March 4, 2018 Jeff You are right of course, but that said who doesn't like dreaming of the next lens? I am looking forward to getting the camera and seeing where it fits into my setup... I have an uncomfortable feeling that a 45mm on cropped medium format in a gorgeous body is going to most often take the slot in my shooting the the M10 has been filling. Jeff S Posted March 4, 2018 Share #1952 Posted March 4, 2018 That’s why a 45 (35 ish equivalent FOV) wouldn’t be my first choice; the M10 and MM1 fill that niche for me. Jeff

Is the 4116 edition only available in black?Same camera except black, with extra year warranty, leather hand strap and a box. If the standard version were black, I imagine they’d be charging a premium for silver. Very Leica-like. Jeff Edited March 4, 2018 by Jeff S
Guest VVJ Posted March 4, 2018 Share #1955 Posted March 4, 2018 The price point is becoming very appealing. I am not sure why anyone would want to sink $19K in a Leica S at this stage... And the X1D is more compact and slightly lighter than the Leica SL... And I still have 7 Hasselblad HC lenses that I can use through the adapter... Does anybody know how long these price reductions are going to last?
Jeff S Posted March 4, 2018 Share #1956 Posted March 4, 2018 No, and it’s so far limited AFAIK to some places like B&H and Adorama. Other dealers, like my semi-local one, are none too happy about the discounts and their already tight margins. I’m willing to wait and possibly miss temporary discounts; more important for me to learn more about the product and lens direction, and to better assess Hasselblad’s execution, delivery and reliability. Things look good so far to me with better than expected FW updates. The X1D has moved ahead of the SL and the S system for my needs, but still needs to deliver on lenses, and possibly a few other improvements. alib Posted March 4, 2018 Share #1957 Posted March 4, 2018 It is more cost effective to fly to NYC stay in a hotel a few nights and come back to UK with X1D and still be quid's in over UK X1D price. There is speculation on X1D forum that price drop is linked to Sony announcing new 100MP sensor that will find its way into X1D, Pentax and Fuji either tail end 2018 or 2019
