Later this summer, my wife & I are traveling to Europe. We plan on visiting Prague, Vienna & Budapest and staying 3-4 days in each city. Along with the DL109, I will be bringing my M9 long. But, I'm not entirely sure in my choice as a good 2-lens kit to capture the city sights. I plan on shooting streets and buildings inside and outside. Also, there will be a lot of night shoots & a few portrait of the wife too.

Currently, I own...

18 SEM,

24 Elmar-M,

S’cron-M 28 ASPH,

S’lux-M 35 ASPH FLE,

S’cron-M 50 ASPH,

APO S’cron-M 75,

Elmarit-M 90,

and the APO-Telyt-M 135 f/3.4.

What would you advise me to take with me?

Thanks in advance,

fstel

For ease of carrying I'd just take a 35mm. Move forward for close up, step back for wide. For inside shots take a very wide angle lens.

BTW, Welcome to the forum.

P.S. You'd see more of Europe in the countryside rather than in cities. Up to you. Travel these days seems to be "see a city and tick it off the list. Phew, that's done Paris, etc."

Europe has amazing sights away from urban areas. Have you seen the Matterhorn from Zermatt? Have you seen the west coast of Ireland?

Anyway, enjoy your trip. :)

If it were me, either the 28mm/50mm combo or the 35mm/75mm Combo. Which to choose between these two combos depends more on your personal style than anything else, but I would probably lean more to the 35/75 for my personal use.

The 18 could be a lot of fun indoors especially and for certain cityscapes, but it requires much more work to take a compelling image, and it sounds like this event is more about the trip than the pictures. Stick with one of the two combos I mentioned and you'll be fine. Either will work great.

Oh, one other recommendation... The right lens combo is more about your style than any absolute. If any one person's advice rings true to you, it's likely because their perspective is similar to yours, so it's fine if you go that way and disregard the rest of us. Or even if you go out on a limb all your own. You'll just find yourself "seeing" in the particular focal lengths you have with you. Nothing wrong with that.

35. You have the DL109 for everything else.

Agree to the above.

DL109 covers you for 24-75mm, and the 35Lux FLE is all you need on the M9 for low light and great all round images.

I holidayed in Vienna for 3 weeks and also have 35Lux FLE, and can confirm this lens is the most convenient, particularly as you won't need to change lens and will travel much lighter.  If this is your first trip to Vienna, most sites of interest are in walking distance from St Stephens Cathedral, so it's likely you will be walking and on your feet all day.

For me, any Lux lens is a must have travelling lens, which should never be left at home, as once you are out and about, if you have not brought it along, you'll be non stop wishing for it.

24, 35, 90.

I did exactly the same trip in 2014 (plus Paris).

Prague and Vienna (visit the Leica shop in Vienna) have everything from narrow lanes (the 24) to expansive landscapes (any lens), as does Budapest. You will want the reach of the 90 for shots across the Danube and up the wide promenades.

Honestly it won't matter what you take, as long as you have an ultra wide, wide/normal and tele.

You could equally go with 18, 28 and 75. Your images will still be amazing.

Take whichever combination weights the least! You will feel it!

Enjoy :)
