fotografr Posted August 3, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 3, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) A friend of mine canoeing near my cabin in the Michigan Upper Peninsula. I took this a couple of years ago and just printed it. M6, 35 lux.

stuny Posted August 3, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 3, 2006 Brent - Perfection in low-key subtlety with its continuous tones and the stark contrast of the canoe and its reflection vs. the misted sun.
martinop Posted August 3, 2006 Share #3 Posted August 3, 2006 Like much this peaceful and tranquil scene i.e. the lighting tones, early morning mist, reflections, lone canoer and the supporting compositional elements.
dan_drabek Posted August 3, 2006 Share #4 Posted August 3, 2006 Brent, I'm glad you finally decided to share this one. In my opinion, an almost perfect image. And one of my favorite subjects--and pastimes. For my taste this is one of the best you've posted to this forum. DD
PhotoArchival Posted August 3, 2006 Share #5 Posted August 3, 2006 I felt that I have seen this image before...must have been in my dreams. Thank you for sharing. My wifes father Lives in the "Yoopers". We were just there visiting. I will post some photo's from when he took us to Fayette (sorry for the spelling). It is beautiful country up there. SOOO quiet!!! wizard Posted August 3, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 3, 2006 Brent, you had another canoe shot in the old forum, a color one, which I found most impressive, but this one is equally striking! Thanks for sharing, it is a wonderful photograph. Andy

lambroving Posted August 3, 2006 Share #8 Posted August 3, 2006 Brent, Nice one! Tri-X I presume? Like the way you pulled off the sunrise in the fog. Might wish for a bit more dynamic range, but as DD said, otherwise near perfect. I actually prefer the kayak shot for the dynamic. Perhaps I see only in color these days... fotografr Posted August 3, 2006 Author Share #9 Posted August 3, 2006 Thanks very much for your comments. Andy--You have a great memory. I've posted several canoe photos, but the one I think you are remembering was taken on the same morning as this. DD--It's also one of my favorite things to do, although being in my kayak takes a close second. AdeL--I'm not familiar with Fayette, but will watch for your photos. This spot is on the Sturgeon River about 5 miles east of Norway. William--Are you back, or checking in from Grenadier on your laptop? Yes, this was Tri-X, my long-time favorite for b&w. The lack of dynamic range comes from my scanner (Epson 3200). The actual print looks pretty good to me.
albert Posted August 3, 2006 Share #10 Posted August 3, 2006 Brent.......It reminds me of the times when the wind comes up and I cannot get home. We who love this means of travel must head for the nearest shore and find something heavy to but in the front of the canoe. I first viewed this photo with my laptop.....amazing how it changes depending upon the tilt of the screen. Great photo.....moves me to think of the North......Al
fotografr Posted August 3, 2006 Author Share #11 Posted August 3, 2006 Thanks, Al. I know just what you mean. I recall once about 15 years ago getting caught in a huge storm not far from where this photo was taken. There was tremendous wind, very close lightning strikes, driving rain and trees falling down all around. I was with a friend and we actually wondered if we were done for. Found out later a tornado had passed about a mile from where we were hunkered down. That's as close as I ever need to be to one.

Only wish I WERE still at the Grenadier. Think you might have enjoyed it. I know Conrad would... Good trip that was although very expensive at current exchange rates, but not much photography from me as I was doing the logistics and driving and wasn't often in the mood. Ron shoud have some superb shots if he can find the time to post them. Lots of Scala, E100GX and Elite. Maybe I'll have a few happy surprises from the meagre five rolls I managed. Back to the salt mines and reality tomorrow...
fotografr Posted August 3, 2006 Author Share #13 Posted August 3, 2006 "Good trip that was although very expensive at current exchange rates." Hello William, I can only imagine the expense. Hiring your Morgan probably cost more than my car did off the showroom floor. By the way, how much was that 1995 Dom Perignon? Cheers,
mgcd Posted August 3, 2006 Share #14 Posted August 3, 2006 An image I certainly would have liked to have taken myself... what more can I say?

gylee Posted August 5, 2006 Share #16 Posted August 5, 2006 This a very fine photograph indeed. I think that it is the reflections in the water that do it for me. I hope that you have a suitably large print of this displayed somewhere prominent. G.

harmsr Posted August 6, 2006 Share #19 Posted August 6, 2006 Brent, Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy seeing this style of wide angle photo from you. The "mystical" fog is really great in this shot. Best, Ray
leicamann Posted August 7, 2006 Share #20 Posted August 7, 2006 Classic elemental graphic elements that make up a good photographic statement. I assume this is scanned from print. I am also looking to getting a Focomat Enlarger..its not that complicated , really, to print your own prints. Thanks for sharing. Regards, Leicamann:)
