M (240) shutter release stops working

I've had my Leica M (240) for slightly over two years but, until recently, never used Live View. Now I find that after I use Live View there are times when I turn on the camera and get no response when I press the shutter release: it goes down all the way but nothing happens. I've tried removing and reinserting the battery but that makes no difference. While I haven't been able to duplicate the steps that lead to this problem, I believe it's related to my using Live View, not only because it never happened before I used LV, but also because I have just determined that to get the shutter release to work again, I have to turn on Live View. Also, when the shutter will not activate, the meter works erratically as well; one time the shutter speed indication (in aperture priority) was stuck at 4', regardless of aperture or scene brightness. As this shutter freeze has only happened four times, I haven't had the chance to see what else might me happening with the meter as I'm frantically trying to get the camera to work—this happened on an assignment last week.

Any thoughts, other than my sending it to Leica?

Thanks for your input!

Sorry, I should have said that I am using the latest firmware, 2.0.3.0. Of course I did a reset but it did not solve the problem.

On the other hand, I've now figured out how to trigger the problem—BUT this does not work every time, sometimes everything is fine. However, there definitely was the problem after this sequence of steps:

1. Turn on Live View

2. Make an exposure with Live View on

3. Turn off Live View

4. Turn off camera

5. Turn on camera: shutter release doesn't work.

Sorry, cannot replicate. This appears to be a specific problem with your camera. It should be returned to Leica. Make sure that  you let them know that you are a working  professional and ask whether they are able to provide a loaner. If needed, contact Wtzlar.

This is very similar issue which I had with my M-P. I sent the camera to Wetzler, Germany last week.

The only way for me to replicate the issue was to leave the camera in Live View until it goes into sleep mode. After waking it up, by pressing the shutter button half way, the shutter was unresponsive and exactly as you said, I had to switch to Live View and take a photo before I could switch back to rangefinder. And when the shutter freezes the metering is completely frozen or weird.

The only difference here is that you don't talk about the open shutter curtain. Next time it freezes, take off the lens and check if the shutter curtain is open.

I suspected that Live View and EVF's Live View were messing up with the shutter and so reported when I sent the camera in. Again these were the steps for me to replicate the issue:

1. Turn on Live View

2. Make an exposure with Live View on

3. Let the camera falls into sleep mode

4. Turn off Live View and turn off the camera manually

5. Turn on the camera manually

If the shutter button is frozen and metering is weird or frozen, then you have exactly the same problem as I had. With one difference that my shutter curtain was staying open most of the time in sleep mode and I shipped the camera with open shutter so that they can see it.

It was very frustrating when the shutter froze on me. I had to think and do the steps you mentioned to release the shutter and until then, the bird had packed his stuff and gone home, the dog turned around and showing me its back and the horse was miles away.

Jaap suggested to send it to Wetzler, Germany. I believe if you also send it there, then they would figure out something with the Live View mode, because at least two other people reported similar issues with frozen shutter related to LV mode on my thread.

I just tried a few times; it does not freeze my camera, so it cannot be a general firmware bug. The right solution seems to be to send such cameras in.

I just tried with my M-P, too - I can't reproduce the error. Hopefully Leica will get this sorted out quickly for borowiec.

Freeze of the shutter release also happened to me, but not with live view - at least not activated intentionally - but wit h long exposure, activated accidentally. How I solved the problem: recharged the battery, and everything return to normal. However, after upgrade of the firmware, and be careful not to left camera switched on when put it in camera bag, problem never happened again.

Thanks all for your input. This is what Leica says:

"This seems to be a shutter issue, where the solenoid is sticking and keeping the shutter open. It will need to come to the Service Dept."

I've told them I'm a working photographer and that the M is my main camera and I asked about a loaner.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, it's now been over a week since I sent an e-mail to the person at Leica Service whom Leica told me to contact about getting my M repaired, but still no reply. I'm not sure how to proceed at this point, if the manufacturer refuses to respond...
