M-D battery discharge as camera is not turning off automatically

The separators of the Hadley digital are much better for the Leica bag. It's possible to order a set directly from billingham.

Edward, just checked the Billingham web shop, the Hadley digital dividers look pretty much like the once in my Billingham for Leica and there are no dimensions given to compare. Can you help me to understand what's the difference and what makes them better than the ones in the Billingham for Leica. Thanks a lot.

Perfect solution:

Remove the the digital M multi selector mode switch - replace with stiff Leica M7 on/off switch, leave auto off in camera at "never" - all problems solved and further meaningfully simplified a cluttered feature bloat.

The original separators are made of harder and stiffer material while the Hadley digital are made of soft velvety like material. They are also shorter so they make it easier to store the camera pointing downwards. What you describe used to happen with my M240, though no battery drain due to auto shutdown, but I often found the switch turned to on while in the bag.

Thanks Edward for the feedback, will try it out...

This is saying M60 goes to sleep every 2 minutes so I have been thinking M-D would be same, but actually never ???

The linked article talks about a time when his M60 took 7 sec to wake up and he missed the opportunity. It seems by removing the sleep, Leica has *fixed* MD. :D

Thank you.

For me it sounds better than the camera like M-D (looking for "film-like experience) falling asleep in 2 mins and taking 2seconds to wake up every time.

For my 246 I am setting it to 10mins which seems to be working well, or otherwise I could have disabled auto power off function entirely.

Just wish that the "standby mode" for M-D is then effective enough, so that unless we intentionally or unintentionally half-press the shutter, the power is some what saved.

I think Jaap is on the ball with his comments about the bag. The Hadley dividers would help, but fundamentally the OP needs a larger camera bag and throw away or sell to a mug the absurdly small Billingham Leica bag. Close fitting bags are no good for street shooters, no good for casual photographers, no good for anybody.

Asked for a tiny firmware fix and suddenly get a new larger bag in my shopping basket which I was happy to avoid with all my Ms the last 15 years. [emoji28]

M-D as the 1st M in history that cannot be used with the Leica Billingham. tststs... ;)

Seriously. Love the bag, it's perfect size and had been around the globe with me.

You don't need a larger bag - the Leica Kombitasche Klein - old type will not activate the switch:

No, never sleeps ;)

The M60 closes the viewfinder displays at about 15 seconds, and goes to sleep after 2mins. Start up from either is 1 second max. I have left the camera on by accident many times and the battery has never gone flat. Interesting that they chose a different implementation for the M-D?

See http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/507949-REG/Billingham_501301_01_Digital_Hadley_Bag_Black.html for Billingham Hadley Digital.

See http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/287055-REG/Leica_14854_Combination_Bag_for_M.html for Leica M Combination Bag

Billingham Hadley Digital is smaller than the Leica M Combination Bag.

I am using Billingham Hadley Digital when carrying M-D alone. This bag is fine with me.

If I wanted to carry my Q as backup, I use Billingham Hadley Small.

I I wanted to carry Q, M-D and a spare lens, I use Billingham Haldey Pro.

Can a newer bag help in faster starup time as well? :D

No, but an SDXC card formatted in ExFAT will enable the M Typ 240 series to boot quite a bit faster, so this probably would work for the M-D as well.

Good news from Leica, with the next firmware update there will be an auto power off (probably option).

That makes sense.  The M6 makes a poor analogy because even if the battery dies only the meter is affected, the camera is still usable.  The digitals become paperweights when the battery dies.  I don't see why Leica couldn't have made it so all the M240 settings (except those involving video and LV of course) could be available via some sort of wired or wireless tethering.  That would allow full user customization.
