Stein K S Posted May 17, 2016 Share #81 Â Posted May 17, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi and sorry about not letting this go... Â But I have this older Puts book... And I find nothing that says anything about a second #2 computation of the Elmar-M. So both mine and the ICT copy is v1 of the Elmar-M (if not special editions do constitute the right to carry their own version numbers just by being soecial editions). What I do see in Puts old compendium (Hoove 2001) on page 114 though is that he "wrongfully" uses "Elmar-M" under the drawing of the optical construction on the 1957 version of the Elmar 50/2,8... Â But as I said... sorry to bring this up again...
Advertisement Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 Hi Stein K S, Take a look here Lux 50 Asph to Summi 50 AA. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jto555 Posted May 17, 2016 Share #82 Â Posted May 17, 2016 I am considering going to the lighter of the two lenses, but of course the cost is high. Who has done this and frankly, is it worth the cost -- and the loss of 1.4.?? I would have to figure that the Summicron AA 50 is going to be a lens that after 5 years will likely hold its value undamaged. Just getting back to the OP. What are you doing with your photos after you shot them? The reason I ask is that I was on a shoot yesterday (to be used in the national papers) and I was extolling the virtues of my Leica when the client asked "Will I see the difference in the papers?" Â Err... No.

I bet that the bo-keh of the 50AA is recognizable for a connoisseur
lct Posted May 17, 2016 Share #84  Posted May 17, 2016 Hi and sorry about not letting this go...  But I have this older Puts book... So both mine and the ICT copy is v1 of the Elmar-M (if not special editions do constitute the right to carry their own version numbers just by being soecial editions). All i can say is the Elmar-M 50/2.8 (# 11823/11824/11831, 1994-2007) is a new version of Elmar 50/2.8 (# 11612, 1957-1974). Both versions have 4 elements in a similar, if not identical package but the lens has been redesigned in 1994 for the M6J and remained so with cosmetic changes up to 2007. My own electronic copy of Erwin Puts' Compendium (page 97) says « Introduced in 1994 as a special lens, only to be sold in combination with the M6J body, it has evolved into a normal , but underrated, catalogue item since 1996. Production however was continued during 1995. The image quality of this completely redesigned lens is amazingly good and now the position of the stop is between the second and third element. One might assume that the 4 element design has been fully explored and in a sense that is the case. Still the Leica designers could extract more performance out of the design, showing that improvements are always possible », etc. See also E. Puts, "Leica M-Lenses Their soul and secrets", september 2002, page 42 here:  https://issuu.com/interfoto/docs/leica-m-lenses---their-soul-and-secrets_en-

Err... No.  If using that gear makes you happier than chances are that's reflected in the quality of your work.  So, yes, the client may very well see a big difference in the papers.
