KallumR Posted April 26, 2016 Share #1 Posted April 26, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) First off, Apologies for asking what i'm sure is now a redundant question to those of the forum who have un-undoubtedly answered the same question 1 million times. But i'll ask it anyway, When it comes to shooting black and white on your M8/.2 do you: Shoot with the in camera saturation setting of black and white and call it a day (with or without IR filter) Shoot with the in camera saturation setting of black and white but use color filters like yellow etc. on your lens/es for desired effects (with or without IR filter) Shoot color, RAW, with no IR filter and then go to black and white in LR or PS If it is option 3 for you, how do you tweak it, what settings are you using and why? Naturally if your option doesn't resemble one here, let me know! Thanks a lot guys ) K.
Advertisement Posted April 26, 2016 Posted April 26, 2016 Hi KallumR, Take a look here The ultimate question on B&W. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest Posted April 26, 2016 Share #2 Posted April 26, 2016 #3! the raw files are very clear and sharp (much better than the jpgs). the camera iso setting is at base iso (ever!) even if i need a higher sensitivity in fact! so my shots are often underexposed! when i develope the files i push them to the iso need. the reason for this procedure is that a modern raw editor makes a much better job than the 10 years old camera software. i use photoshop /capure one. lambda. KallumR Posted April 26, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted April 26, 2016 So when you convert the DNG's to color, I assume in lightroom, what process do you use, do you tweak the image much? Change highlights etc?

david strachan Posted April 26, 2016 Share #6 Posted April 26, 2016 Kallum shoot DNG+JPG's. Set the camera to show B&W JPG's (Colour Saturation set Black &White) so you can visualise what's happening. Personally I often shoot B&W anyway as I like composing that way. Then in LR using the DNG file work in B&W tab in Develop module...the advantage here is you can use the colour sliders (while in B&W mode) to darken or lighten any of the colours of the DNG file...works a treat. And don't forget to learn to dodge&burn using the Adjustment Brush-Exposure...this really gives monochrome punch. all the best..
