Ugly cars but functional ... rather like Fiats. Compare those with an Aston Martin and you'll understand why (fictional) James Bond drove a DB5 rather than a Citroen. The reg suggests it is Dutch. Whoever owns it has cared for it. Very bright sunlight but well managed by light and shade on the bonnet.

Peter,

I completely agree with your reasoning as to why Bond drove  the Austin Martin, but to label the Citroen as ugly feels like a dismissal. The Citroen has tons of character and without those, and the Deux Chevaux,  France would not be France. Imagine that scene in the "American Friend", where, while in Paris,  Bruno Ganz' character gets picked up by Dennis Hopper to go see a cancer specialist in an Aston Martin! It would not have been the same.

Now Fiat, that's another thing altogether!  The Fiat 124 Sport was one of the cooler looking cars to grace American roads (we don't have motorways:) that I recall growing up. Okay, leave Triumph and TRs 3-6 out of this for now, and which brought with them a different set of issues (Lucas).   The 124 Sport was understated compared to the Alpha as was the 124 Spider, also a decent looking car.  I have a soft spot for those as I learned to drive standard transmission on my girlfriend's Fiat 131 when it was between visits to the shop. Okay the 131, not a particularly good looking car but hey.  I would have  loved to have the 124 Sport second only to a 1600 or 2002, the latter of which I found a decent trade-in for a few years later.

David,

Search for 'Fiat Multipla' and view images. Ugly is the first word that enters my head whenever I see one. The 124 was a decent looking car but that was donkeys years ago!

I cannot argue that one, even if it lost the apron under the windshield, it isn't much. The Multipla from the late 50s however looked pretty good. This model was never imported to the states to my knowledge.

Thanks Peter,

I’m not enough of a petrol head to really have an opinion on the car, taken out of time and context (which vintage cars are when parked up on their own in the modern world) I think the car looked great, evoking nostalgia and made me think of times I never lived in!

It was in great condition!

Bond drove a DB5 in GF because John Stears persuaded Aston to let him have one* (well two actually), in the novel it was a DB mark3.

For most of the books Bond drove a Bentley. In fact if memory serves... if Fleming made reference to a particular brand or product (be that the Rolex on Bond’s wrist, Leica scope on his rifle or Turkish tobacco cigarettes) it was because Fleming himself rated and/or used those brands

*product placement is not a new concept in movies.

For a few months before I came to live in America,  I worked for a Fiat Dealership, I loved the Multipla, I was the Demo driver, that and the Fiat 5cylinder Turbo coupe were my favorites..  L

As everyone who has tried out the early version of the Super-Angulon with a digital M knows this lens, due to its non-retrofocus optical formula, it delivers horrendous colour-shift at the sides of the image-area meaning it's pretty useless when used in 'colour-mode'. Add-in the lens' propensity for very marked vignetting it is easy to see why digi-shooters often pass this lens by without a second thought. Oh, and TTL metering doesn't work either...

I bought my copy expecting to use it solely on my Monochrom (where the still-present vignetting is less of an issue) but following-on from a brief discussion with adan (Thanks, adan!) about how the Bayer Array may or may not have an effect on the elementary nature of this colour-fringe phenomenon I thought I'd take the M-D / S-A combination out to see what the results are like when the DNG files are converted to black'n'white.

Here are two snaps (not exactly award-winning pictures in themselves but good for illustrative purposes) each of which being shown in two versions; Colour sooc / Mono dodged hilights & dodged mid-tones. The dodging was a hasty affair - perhaps a minute or two just as an experiment - but it shows that with a little bit of care and attention it is likely that pretty good results might be achieved without too much trouble;
