JonP Posted April 25, 2016 Share #1 Posted April 25, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm looking at getting the EVF for my 240 MP as I'm going to be doing some macro photography, I have read that the Leica EVF is a rebranded Olympus VF2, is this correct? Is there any difference in the Leica version? Is the EVF really helpful doing macro photography?
Advertisement Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Hi JonP, Take a look here EVF or not EVF?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted April 25, 2016 Share #2 Posted April 25, 2016 Yes to all, but the Leica version only differs cosmetically. Actually both are branded versions of an Epson EVF design. Yes - macro is perfectly fine with the EVF, even if it is not up to today's standard.
keithlaban.co.uk Posted April 25, 2016 Share #3 Posted April 25, 2016 I use the Olympus version which is identical other than cosmetically. The EVF is very useful in many situations including macro.
Peter Kilmister Posted April 25, 2016 Share #4 Posted April 25, 2016 Apart from a name they are identical. A very useful tool for macro work.
JonP Posted April 25, 2016 Author Share #5 Posted April 25, 2016 Unfortunately it looks like the Olympus version is discontinued. Has any one tried the VF-3 or is that not compatible?
Peter Kilmister Posted April 25, 2016 Share #6 Posted April 25, 2016 Only the VF2 is compatible. I suggest you look for one on ebay.

JonP Posted April 25, 2016 Author Share #9 Posted April 25, 2016 Interestingly, the EVF2 seems to be on back order as well. I wonder if a replacement is about to come out? Presumably with an accompanying firmware update.....
jaapv Posted April 25, 2016 Share #10 Posted April 25, 2016 Not a chance... That train has left the station long ago,
sml_photo Posted April 25, 2016 Share #11 Posted April 25, 2016 I JUST bought a used EVF-2. It arrived last Friday. Perfect condition, boxed, etc. Big savings compared to "new," though not compared to the Olympus version. They seem to pop up in the usual places in addition to eBay. ECohen Posted April 25, 2016 Share #12 Posted April 25, 2016 I have the Leica version because i didn't want to take the chance that some firmware update would make my off brand useless . After being on this forum I would trust this crowd and in hindsight go the the Olympus/rebrand and save some money. Very useful on the M240 ...opens up new world to making the rangefinder camera more useful for everything. Its a little slow to refresh but it does the job. bocaburger Posted April 25, 2016 Share #13 Posted April 25, 2016 I picked up 3 of the Olympus ones used for less than the cost of a new Leica one. One each for my two M240's and one to keep as a spare in case they get scarce in the future. The last one I got for $75 and couldn't resist.
jmahto Posted April 25, 2016 Share #14 Posted April 25, 2016 I'm looking at getting the EVF for my 240 MP as I'm going to be doing some macro photography, I have read that the Leica EVF is a rebranded Olympus VF2, is this correct? Is there any difference in the Leica version? Is the EVF really helpful doing macro photography? Good decision to get EVF. Not only macro but it opens up the world to plethora of manual focus lenses, cheap, exotic, all kinds. I also love how it is implemented in M240. Usually I have LV button disabled so that it doesn't get turned on by accident. Even with LV button disabled, I can simply slide EVF and press the EVF button with right thumb to switch it on and off. Cool !! Sometimes with long lens, you may want to switch off EVF after focusing and shoot by looking through OVF to avoid camera shake at low shutter speeds. This is easily done with right thumb. ...and lastly... if you want Leica branded one then by all means get it. There is no need to explain to others who would love to tell you how you should use your own money. Fortunately here in this forum folks are nice... as long as you don't criticize how low tech and horrible Leica EVF is. Fair disclaimer: 1) I have Leica branded one and 2) I love low tech old fashined cars :D
