PaulJohn Posted April 9, 2016 Share #1 Posted April 9, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hope someone can help. Usually when I insert a card LR automatically goes into import mode and after import all photos are copied into a dated tree structure on my mac. This time that didn't happen so I opened the import screen manually from library. everything seemed to work until I tried to locate them on my Mac and they are not there. The files are still on the card but LR has catalogued them right where they are without copying them to the Mac. I can't import them now as they are already catalogued. Fortunately I haven't yet removed the card and reformatted. What went wrong and how to fix anyone please. Thanks Paul

gyoung Posted April 9, 2016 Share #2 Posted April 9, 2016 I do it all on a pc but it sounds like it went into cataloguing mode without transferring to the computer. It doesn't know a card from any other drive so will happily catalogue files on the card. I always do the transfer to the computer outside LR, weed out the duff ones then import to the LR catalogue from the folder on the computer I would disconnect the card, remove the files from the catalogue, then start again. CheshireCat Posted April 9, 2016 Share #3 Posted April 9, 2016 Like Gerry said, just remove the images from the catalog (the "Remove" option just removes the image from the catalog without deleting the files wherever they are). When manually importing files, first create the folder and copy the images from the card into that folder. Then remove the card (so you are sure you are not importing from it) and then ask Lightroom to import the files from the folder.
PaulJohn Posted April 9, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted April 9, 2016 Thank you. I hoped there would be a way to preserve my edits. At least I didn't lose everything.
Exodies Posted April 9, 2016 Share #5 Posted April 9, 2016 You can preserve your edits. Create a folder in Lightroom library module and drag the photos from the last import folder to your new folder. You need to have the SD card mounted to do this. Check the import options that you have specified the correct destination folder and COPY rather than move to it for next time. CheshireCat Posted April 9, 2016 Share #6 Posted April 9, 2016 Thank you. I hoped there would be a way to preserve my edits. At least I didn't lose everything. If you have edited the pictures, keep your SD card in the reader, select all of them and then tell Lightroom to "Update DNG Preview and Metadata". This will store your edits in the DNG files, and regenerate the embedded thumbnails.
