Ok, I'll bite, what is that supposed to mean?

He's being rude or bored... he means he has seen this one before enough times for it to appear repetitive to him, and is therefore willing to ignore the fact that a number of other people on the thread have a different threshold.

Rough translation!

Some WA lens seems right for walking around on the street (no distant vistas). Which WA seems mostly up to you. With the M8 crop factor, 28mm is in the middle. If you don't need even f/2.8, then the Tri-Elmar 28/35/50 might be right for you. But a prime lens from 24 through 35 will have its own attractions.

Once you have a focal length, then the question becomes whether to get a current asph model or an older lens, which can range from a few years to decades. That again is a matter of personal choice, leavened by finding the one you want.

You really can't make a mistake, so I'd suggest focusing on figuring out what appeals to you.

If I had to pick one single focal length lens for street it would be the 28 cron (the new 28 elmarit would be a good choice too if you can find one). I think the 35 cron or lux would be good for someone who likes a 50 on a full frame. A 50 would be too long with the 1.3 crop factor of the M8 for general street photography unless you like to do portait type of work in the street.

Dude,

I have the M8 and the 35lux1.4 asph one lens...thats right I haven't needed another lens yet.

I have shot a portrait recently and cropped it by 50% and blew up to 20" x 40" color and sharpness beautiful.

The shot was in a ballroom under low lighting hand held f2 at maybe 1/60sec and I didn't miss the shot!

See I have had all the major camera brands as systems at one time or another currently I have Canon system (more than 10 lenses and 3 bodies) and I just sold a Rollei system.

When I bought the M8 I said only one lens and if I buy another lens I will also buy another M8 as to have two cameras on me ready to point and shoot.

You can always buy another lens and what lens you choose is up to you the 35lux has served my purpose for all shots.

Cheers

Barry

In the end, the lens you happen to have on your camera when that once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity presents itself is the best lens to have. The eye is more important than the lens.

[Disclosure: I am a Leicaphile.] With that in mind, I strongly state that you can make a mistake with some Leica lenses. Of all the lenses I have used (21 thru 135) on my M's, the pre-asph 35's are so subject to flare as to render them unusable in many situations.

For all of the lenses in the 21 thru 35 range, cost is not really relevant. They are priced failry, don't lose value very much (think BMW's here and a hole in the wallet), and last for lifetimes. if you decide to do a 35, make sure it's an asph version.

I'm with Barry on this though I do have a lot of other glass. As a result of the fact that I have so far failed (out of five samples) to find a 28 or 35mm Leica lens that focusses correctly on either of my M8 bodies (there are other threads on this and I am not alone!) I have been more or less forced to use the 50 Lux a lot for street. I too, like everyone here would have thought it too long but in fact it is very often not and I don't find myself missing the shot. I now have a very good CV35 and I use that sometimes, but have come to prefer the 50 lux, which I can use as the light drops and even at night.

I would also like to point out that the OP said 'I shoot mostly street and people' and IMHO the 50 lux is very good at this combo. What's interesting though is that pretty much everyone here just saw the word 'street'...

Have you tried a 28 Elmarit, mine is dead on. I agree with the 50 Lux, I find it extremely usefull for street, parties etc.

But it CAN'T be useful for that sort of thing, as a large number of posts here from those who haven't thought to try it attest!

I did try the elmarit in a shop, on the basis that having been designed for the M8 it might not have the issues with which I had become familiar. It focussed perfectly but I currently have a replacement 28 cron on the way and one of my bodies is in Solms with my 35 Cron for therapy. If this doesn't work, I'll either get the elmarit (bit too slow and contrasty) or the MATE (lot too slow but very flexible).

When I was discussing the backfocus issues on my 35 Lux with a chap at Solms who was familiar with my Venice portfolio, he observed that I wouldn't get the same look with the elmarit and I believe him: when I did manage, through DOF and focus bracket, to get good results on the 35 lux, it was awesome...

Best

The new 28 Elmarit ASPH does produce a different look than any of my other Leica lenses. It's astoundingly sharp and contrasty, so much so that it's going to take some experimenting to make it work well in bright situations. However, it's a joy to use and quick to focus.
