Yes- Kodachrome 25 on Cibachrome - those beautiful intense colours, especially the reds :) :) Unfortunately I lost most of my enlargements over the years through a rather chaotic period in my life. :(

Don't let the shop scan for you.

If it is not a really good shop which is used to do high quality work and which does ALL it's processing and film handling in house (very rare, especially when it comes to 35mm negative film development), don't let them handle the film more than you have to.

I go so far to not let them cut my film as it happened a few times too often that the good people either have cut into frames or made a mess out of the cutting sequence for archival sleeves.

Of course having someone else unnecessarily handle your film increases the likelihood of scratches, creases and dirt on your negatives.

 

1) Just let them develop the film and give you the negatives.

2) Buy yourself the most expensive dedicated film scanner you want to afford (read: the cheapest solution you can get away with).

3) Scan the entire film in one batch at a lowish resolution.

4) Edit the scans and select the keepers you want to scan at high quality.

5) Scan the keepers at the best quality you can manage. / Have a professional shop scan them for you. / Have a good shop make proper prints from them for you.

 

Over time you will learn, upgrade pieces of equipment, refine the workflow.

 

Good starters for reasonable first scanners are new (or lightly used) Plustek scanners (fully manual operation, scanning frame by frame) or if you are the adventurous type and aim for higher quality at the risk of ending up with a dead scanner down the road: buy a Minolta 5400 or Nikonscan in the 400 - 800 EUR price range.

 

Scanning is a hassle at first and the learning curve to end up with good quality scans is much steeper then learning to use a film camera but once you have the workflow down, it's bliss.

 

I have to disagree with this advice, especially in the case of Neil who is a 'beginner'.

 

I process my own B&W film but C41 or E6 has to be farmed out. I generally use Snappy Snaps who have always been excellent (although my local one has apparently had problems with their minilabs). Get the film processed and a CD of the images (or memory stick whatever). A set of prints is usually only about £1 extra so worth having I guess.

 

The low res CD scan is fine for viewing on the computer or posting on the web (allowing for minor PP work if necessary). I will scan any keepers or images which I want to do more extensive PP work with.

 

Neil can use the prints/CD scans for now until he gets more used to working with film (and decides it's something he really wants to do). Then he can look to buy a scanner and maybe even consider DIY processing. But for the time being I think he'd be happier just taking photos and getting some immediate results.

 

I have honestly had far more problems with so called pro labs, messing up my film.

The lab that is doing mine is scanning them at 1600 x ????? I think that's what he said and putting them on my google drive. I will wait and see what the quality is before I decide if I want to do anything else.

I'm now convinced that the first roll of film was not loaded correctly so I guess that first upload to my google drive won't be very big

I'm really really trying hard not to just shoot but I've done 2 rolls of TriX400 already today and it's only 6pm. I will be on color tomorrow afternoon at this rate.......... As I only have 1 1/2 rolls of B&W left

It's a 150 year old 5 star hotel in Penang Malaysia that is white on the outside and has a bunch of contrasting black and red (which will be black) so yes a B&W photographers paradise. This morning I shot Kellies Castle in fantastic light ......... I know I'm making excuses but really it's been a fantastic day up till now. It is a good shop, Menos (Bang Bang Geng in Kuala Lumpur) - They are film-only enthusiasts, and do all developing and scanning in the shop (35mm and 120). They even let you do your own developing in there. Not much point in buying a $X,000 scanner when you're not even sure yet if you are going to like using film.

Lucky you didn't buy a Canon New F1 with a 12fps motordrive. Glad that you're enjoying it, Neil.

Cheers mate. I guy just asked me if I was shooting film when he saw my camera. So will bullshitted for a while and he said Komtar has many old camera shops so I will try there tomorrow it's in walking distance of the hotel.
