I have been holding out for a new Leica M for a backup/buddy camera for my Q but I have been getting grief from my mate in KL that has a SL (no lenses for his SL yet as he is waiting for the 50mm) he says I should get the SL rather than the M.

I haven't seen the SL in the flesh but from what I can recall from seeing one on the web its quite a bit bigger than a M and ugly as hell......lol

My mate says that the reason I should go with the SL is the AF and seeing as I am now shooting most of the time with the Q that has AF he seems to think that the combination of the Q and SL would be the perfect match.

I'm kind of reluctant to get a SL when I already have a S that seem to me to be the same size.

What do you guys think...........SL or want for the new M????

If autofocus is important to you, then your decision is easy.

The SL will be a much bigger package, as the lenses are SLR sized.

I think the SL is beautiful. I think it is wonderful that Leica is making modern cameras and systems and positioning itself for the post-SLR era. But it has nothing to do with the M really, and is a different approach to photography.

I would think of the SL as filling the same niche as an SLR (or your S). Do you want another camera system with AF, outstanding image quality and capability with zooms and big lenses? Or do you want a Leica M?

Personally, I use a Nikon when required, but feel more connected to my M and carry it almost everywhere. I only break out the big camera when required.

Do do you use your S or your Q more?

I use the Q more than the S as it is small and easy to use.........my S is also very easy to use but its like a brick to walk around with

I've just read another thread on the SL and I think I will just wait and see if a new M comes out in Quadraphina in Sepetember :)

Good grief Neil!

A few weeks ago, that was it, you and the Q were made for each other and nothing else would be needed: GAS was dead and life was easy.

I'm sure there must be clinics for people with your condition. Have you tried counselling?

Peter....no GAS mate, need Oil to hit 90 before the GAS kicks in.

I love the Q and its a keeper, I just fancy having something with a 50mm FL, I could use my D800 or use my S with the 70mm but I like and miss the look and feel of the M. I dressed my Q up the same way as I had my M and it just feels so frigging good, whenever I take my S out of the dry box I think.........shit do I really want to lug this brick around with me all day.

So to answer your question, No GAS but counselling needed for sure :) :) :)

Use manual focus on the Q for a while. That will give you a hint if you'll be happy with a new M,

what a great idea....... I will give it a go, thanks

I recently purchased the Q and love it.  I also have the M7 and M-P (240).  I still love the M7 when I want to shoot film.  The M-P with the electronic view finder is as good as the Q for focusing and I have glasses.  I use the focus aid (10x zoom) through the EVF and it is awesome.  And I can quickly focus using some basic rangefinder DOF techniques.  And the Q is great when you don't have the time or inclination to manually focus.  I have handled the SL at the Leica store and while I think it is a great camera - I just don't want to take a step backwards and carry around a heavy and BIG camera with lens.

Can you at least hold a camera before you ask if you should buy it?  The SL isn't much bigger than the M....not close to the S body size.....it's only the two native zooms, so far, that add so much bulk.  It accepts M lenses for a much smaller package.

You should know that the SL focuses off the sensor, so that's one less type of calibration that you'll have to deal with, unlike a DSLR that might need micro-adjustment with each lens (or an M that may need certain lens/camera calibration).  Oh wait, you don't worry about adjustments...you just buy a different camera.

The Leica Store on the rig has been closed since the oil price drop :( :(  so I will need to wait until I get back on dry land before I can hand hold it for myself :) :) :)

With all the apparent boredom on that rig, why don't you entertain yourself by taking some pics instead of playing again with your mobile device.

I have the Q with me so will post up some pictures later

Neil, I saw the SL on the shelf in Geneva Airport and it looks a lot smaller than I judged from the photos I'd seen on the net. I know you're a big boy with big hands, and I think you'll be very happy with it. It didn't look much bigger than the M, and with the grip I would think you'll feel right at home with it. You'll have a nice system then, and you can still stick your M 50 lens on it should you want to go light on a trip with a Q / SL 50 combo.

The SL will take S lenses. If I had an S I would take the SL as a second body for the S system.

Jaaapv is that with an adapter?
