dkCambridgeshire Posted March 20, 2016 Share #81 Posted March 20, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Remarkable: EBay shows prices for 280/4 not much below the price of new 90 - 280. Will hopefully be able to fondle and try the 90 - 280 (have an option on first delivery) this week. Curious how it handles and what the output quality will be. And what would Freud have to say about this 'fondling' … it's a camera lens … a tool … not a teddy bear dunk
Advertisement Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 Hi dkCambridgeshire, Take a look here 90-280/2.8-4. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
larsv Posted March 20, 2016 Share #82 Posted March 20, 2016 In my case, it's more likely fumble.... Yes, it is a tool. But if you don't like the handling of a tool, the tool isn't for you.

Hi, are you aware of the difference between offering and selling/buying? Of course nobody keeps you from offering at ridiculous prices. I could easily offer it for 20k. But did you find many completed transactions ? Stephan Edited March 21, 2016 by steppenw0lf

dkCambridgeshire Posted March 21, 2016 Share #87 Posted March 21, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I hope the zoom is really good, so I can finally buy the prime at a decent price So SL camera owners are selling / PXing their 280/4R to buy a 90-280SL ?? Maybe a few are but unlikely in sufficient numbers to cause a used market surplus and significant drop in prices. In fact new SL owners wanting a 280/4 R with APO extenders might increase its demand - with resultant buoyant prices. dunk

leitztozeiss Posted March 22, 2016 Share #89 Posted March 22, 2016 Very curious to know if continuous AF with this lens can keep up with moving athletes, such as hockey or basketball......

But, generally speaking, on this particular forum, sometimes a Leica 280 /1.4 APO is definitely not just a cigar. Rick

Of course nobody keeps you from offering at ridiculous prices. I could easily offer it for 20k. But did you find many completed transactions ? Stephan I'm pretty familiar with asking v selling spreads. Probably to do with my background, thank you. I can only find one sold item. Transaction completed in December last year. € 4.299. Currently very few (2) on offer. My guess is that currently there are more people than in December willing to bid and pay significant prices, in any case not below the price fetched for the December transaction. Would not be surprised if a nice sample will fetch a price not far below asking price. Edited March 22, 2016 by larsv

EU asking prices seem to be a bit lower, about $4900. But it doesn't look like anyone is buying. One recent listing expired unsold for $4700 (which is in USD about the same as the last one sold in December). And I can see why. As a Canon user, I would certainly buy a 300/2.8 IS v2 for the same price. Which overall is a better lens. Nikon users can go for the new 300/4 VR, which as per Jim Kasson, is as sharp although not as apo (but much cheaper): http://blog.kasson.com/?p=10070 Canon to follow with a high performance 300/4 in the near future. I bet that the price of the Leica 280/4 is going down. Edited March 22, 2016 by CheshireCat
larsv Posted March 22, 2016 Share #95 Posted March 22, 2016 Thank you. I think your applied the inverted x-rate (USD 4,900 amounts to appr. EUR 4,370) I only looked at EU, as there seems to be a rather weird pricing difference for similar goods between the US and Europe and buying from Europe adds a significant amount on imports from the US. Joshua Lowe Posted March 22, 2016 Share #97 Posted March 22, 2016 Nice review of the SL 90-280 on Leica News & Rumors. Even makes me think about this large lens! I thought the test shots looked very poor. Going to need to see some more under better lighting. And no point-blank zooms on faces.
thighslapper Posted March 22, 2016 Share #98 Posted March 22, 2016 (edited) I thought the test shots looked very poor. Going to need to see some more under better lighting. And no point-blank zooms on faces. Probably OIS was off ........ images are not particularly crisp and I suspect the posts are unsharpened. Typical of a quick 5 minute try without being able to sort out the camera settings and think about what you are really doing...... not remotely representative.... If I had based my purchase on my 5 minutes at Leica Mayfair with a Nocti 50/0.95 I would never have bought one. CheshireCat Posted March 22, 2016 Share #99 Posted March 22, 2016 (edited) How do you conclude the canon is a better lens? Based on the classical use case of long lenses (nature, sport, portraits): - Pros: The Canon is one stop faster, amazing AF, 4-stops image stabilization, easily outresolves 24 MP wide open (I have not tested with 50+ MP, but I am sure it will have no problem), weather-proof. - Cons: It weighs 25% more and is bigger. I don't know if the level of chromatic correction is the same, but the Canon is amazing. Note: Canon does not use the "apo" designation, although the lens has state-of-the-art optics. I find a 300mm lens' DOF at f/2.8 to be too skinny to be useful so one stop faster means bigger, heavier and costlier. No advantage for me. I am not interested in AF, so for me the amazing AF invites Mr. Murphy's law. The Sony's sensor stabilization doesn't add any air/glass surfaces, and doesn't de-center any glass when working. No need to discuss resolution or chromatic aberration, the 280/4 is exemplary. I don't see any advantage for the Canon.
