Could someone please post a picture of the tripod support, preferably with an small Arca type plate on it if you happen to have one?

I've put some on dropbox here:

I only had this rather bulky Kirk plate. RRS plates seem to be much thinner and lighter.

Many thanks Paul. Is the button on the pillar, the detent release for rotating the collar?

As I have not heard from Ffordes, unfortunately it looks like they did not get allocated one by Leica from the second batch. Leica UK's methodology for allocation of desirable items always has been a mystery.

According to the dealer I used to use before Leica took away their premier dealership, H.A.Baker in Lewes, I had the first deposit paid order in the UK for the M9, some four months before it came out (I had spotted one left carelessly sitting on a workbench in Solms). There were loads of posts from folks in the UK saying how much they were enjoying their M9, while I was still waiting, The final straw was when someone posted that they had walked into a London dealer and without having ordered, bought one off the shelf. Emails were sent to the MD in London and CEO in Solms. It turned out that the area Leica rep did not get on with the people at H.A.Baker and was making life difficult for them by not allocating them any M9's. I got mine the next week.

I hope something similar is not happening at Ffordes, although to be fair, I got my SL in the first week of availability. I was #2 in their queue for the 90-280 and they only got one in the first batch and none since.

The button is the release for removing the foot from the ring. You first loosen the knurled knob, then press the button to remove the foot. It prevents disasters if the knob becomes accidentally loosened. When you slide the foot back on the it just clicks into place then you tighten the knob - no need to press the button again. The second knob is for loosening the collar for rotation. It seems to be a neat and easy system, but I have not yet used it on a tripod in anger.

Red Dot said they ordered five at first, but only received two in the first batch. Unfortunately I was third on the list. I don't know how many they got in the delivery a week or so ago that included mine.

Wilson, Is there in fact a 'Leica UK' entity supplying British Leica dealers? UK dealers might be supplied direct from Leica Camera AG in Wetzlar.

Dunk,

My understanding is that everything (other than grey imports), comes via Leica UK or at least is allocated by Leica UK. They may post direct from Germany so that it is one courier risk rather than two courier risks but I am sure they will have been given the allocation by Leica UK. At one time there was a lot of favouritism going on plus leverage on how much stock was being carried, as to what you would be allocated. I understand from the MD of a large UK photo company, that he has been given assurances this no longer happens, which is why he gave up his premier dealership some time ago. Leica is desirous of him restarting, hence the assurances. Some of my older Leica (white) lens boxes have a sticker on them: "Genuine Leica UK Import". The even older red boxes, have Leica UK (or USA) printed on the back in embossed gold print.

Mine is in the tender (?????) care of UPS on the way from Scotland to France. Ffordes always pack very well, so hopefully all should be well. Only thing that worries me is that lightning over the week-end fried my modem router and my office printer (not thank goodness the Epson Stylus Pro 3880). Having had two expensive events, I worry what the third event will be.

Being an M shooter at heart, this is the size and weight comparison for my taste and purposes

And that's with a Noctilux!

The 50/0.95 was the maximum size, weight and bulk I could tolerate - but let's be fair, it's a totally different system with a very different philosophy and capabilities

Admittedly the 90-280 is a special purpose lens and is potentially very good at what it's supposed to do, but dang - the size and weight are daunting for an M guy like myself

I will put the lens through its paces this weekend and decide if I want to keep it or sell it

The 24-90 will be a sleeper keeper
