I think it is going too far to compare the lens cap with a Zeiss ZM lens cap. I don't actually seem much wrong with the 90-280 cap. See the pics below of the comparison. The Leica cap has at least got rubberised bases to the finger latches, so that you can grip them. You can see that I have had to put on sticky velcro on the Zeiss cap, to have any chance of removing it with a standard hood on (that is off my 50mm ZM Planar), without it squirting through your fingers like a wet bar of soap.

I agree with others, that the sharpest point of focus with the 90-280 lens, seems to lie just on the bottom edge of or even below the focus rectangle. Hopefully this is something that can be corrected in firmware. Otherwise the lens seems to live up to expectations in every way.

BTW is the UK passport scheme still going as no passport form was included with my purchase?

The rubberized bases are too shallow for my fingers so i end up squeezing the latches from the outer edges of the lens cap.

It's ok if you're satisfied with the quality of the cap. I'm not. I was expecting something a little more substantial.

I threw the ZM caps into a drawer and bought 3€ caps from eBay that feel and fit a lot better. I don't really use lens caps but if there's risk of the equipment sliding around the bag and potentially causing damage to the elements, i do use them.

Are you guys shooting with IS on or off? I do have some blurry images.

No blurry images for me either. I find it is occasionally better to use MF then the AF facility on the joystick to get the focus near and finally fine tune with the focus ring. Peaking is almost too strong with this lens.

On the lens cap, I might see if I can get a slip on cap to go over the hood, as it would save fiddling about in its depths to take the original lens cap off or replace it.

Just picked up my 90-280 yesterday. When I saw it, I was actually surprised that it looked smaller than I expected from seeing all the pictures on the net. The lens looked really long but when I placed it next to my Nikon 70-200/2.8, without the hood the lens is only just a little longer and the weight is not as bad as I dreaded. May be recent lugging around my Nikon 200-500/5.6 helped :)

Now that the lens arrived, we are expecting quite a bit of thunderstorm for the next few days so

Just playing a little bit around my apartment. Hopefully I will have a chance to try it a bit more thoroughly next week. First impression though, AF is ok but not really up to standard of say, 70-200/2.8 with Nikon D810, let alone D500 in low light or at near minimal focusing distance but it is very fast under good condition. However, IQ is a different story though and I like what I see so far.

From the manual - scan below. Has something, as usual, got lost in translation, as I have not the faintest idea what Leica means apart from the fact that there is no aperture ring, hence no DOF scale. Any ideas?

They wrote "cover display" when they meant to write "top panel display" which is the smaller LCD on top of the body, on the right hand side.

This display is supposed to show the distance you set your lens to as well as the distances which bracket the DOF.

Turning the focusing ring on the lens should change all three values while dialing a different aperture should change only two of those values.

In a nutshell: the distance and the DOF are shown on the top panel display.

While it is great to have this on MF, is there any reason it could not be done on AFs, where it might be equally useful. I was not seeing it because I was in AFs, when I was looking. The DOF at 280/f4.0 is razor thin, makes focusing a Noctilux look easy. Pic below MF (AF would not pick up on the flower) 1/500 at 800ISO. I am not a horticulturalist, so I have no clue as to what the flower that has forced its way up through one of my patios. I just hope it is not the flower of Japanese Knot Weed.

I guess the reason is that with MF it stays constant until you refocus. With AF it would change more frequently.

Though it would still be useful for tripod work or for joystick focussing.

Where does it grow ? UK or France ? And what's the size ? Does it have any leaves ? It looks a bit like an orchid ...

Half press and move the focus ring and you will see it on the top LCD display ......

I couldn't see much use for it till I tried to take some star shots in the dark behind our local church  ....... hardly anything to see so it is the only way to get shots in focus ......  adjust till focus point is just infinity ...... and gives the maximum DOF for foreground

It is actually very useful and a doddle to use.
