A wonderful lens, I love it. In most cases AF ist very fast, sometimes it misses the focus due to my practice with this lens. 280 mm at the long end ist very useful.

For standard photography it will relieve my Nikon.

I'm likely to go for this, but looking forward to feedback and first impressions:

- how well does it balance on a tripod?

- genuinely, how many extra stops does the IS give you?

- how good/quick is the AF?

- in particular, how good is tracking AF with this lens?

- what is bokeh like in good lighting? Evenly lit background? With specular reflections and highlights in the background?

I'm taking image quality (other than bokeh) as more than good enough for all normal purposes, pace Cheshire Cat.

@ LocalHero

eg focus is fine at 280mm. Then you change at 200mm. Your subject, still in focus at 280mm, will run out of focus for while.

@ Jeffrey Abt

focus tracking is not working seriously. Thats a problem of the SL, not the lens (contrast vs phase af).

Sorry for my lousy english, but its better than my native german :-))

Got mine the day before yesterday and only had time yesterday for an hour and a half.  Very well built, balances very pleasantly with the SL and autofocus is medium fast.  Tracking is not really convincing.  Optical quality is really, really good.  Also love the color rendering and unsharpness. Handling is buttery smooth, with just sufficient resistance.  Placed some pics in the SL pictures thread.

This means that the lens is not parfocal.

Very few zooms are. With AF, this is not a big problem for normal photography, but it can be for video.

A selection of images from this afternoon ..... most at 280 with OIS on and speeds of 1/60-1/125.......
