AKW Posted March 1, 2016 Share #1 Posted March 1, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dear colleagues, I´m sorry, if this topic has been dealed earlier, it´s about an older and not so old Elmar-M 2,8/50. The older lens is around 1969, serial n:o 232xxxx, and the other one 1996, serial n:o 373xxxx. I used to have one copy 3 decades ago, and if I remember right, the front element, including the diaphragm ring, was rotating as you turned the focusing ring. How is it with these -69 and -96 lenses? Secondly, is there any differences in image quality? I noticed that the newer one has a 6-blade-diaphragm and the older one has so many blades I could´t count them. That must have some effect to the unfocussed areas and bright spots in it. I presume that the lens coatings has changed as well? And finally, are both version safe to collapse when mounted to digital-M? Many thanks, Arto

jaapv Posted March 1, 2016 Share #2 Posted March 1, 2016 The older type is an Elmar. The newer type is designated Elmar-M and is by far the better lens due to a different positioning of the diaphragm and newer coatings. Yes, it rotates on focusing. Yes, it can be collapsed, but should be mounted/unmounted extended.
spydrxx Posted March 1, 2016 Share #3 Posted March 1, 2016 The Elmar-M has better overall contrast and finer detail resolution than the earlier Elmar, as well as better close-up performance - noticeable at least on film....never used either on digital bodies though. Many older Elmars _do_front rotate with focusing, But My Elmar-M _does not_ rotate with focussing. And I just double checked 30 seconds ago, after having used it all day! lct Posted March 1, 2016 Share #9 Posted March 1, 2016 Sure 50/2.8 v2 does not rotate contrary to v1. v2 is more contrasty also hence showing more saturated colors. Works fine on my R-D1, M8.2, M240, Fuji X-E2 and Sony A7s mod bodies. Leica specs attached for those interested: LeicaM_5028_11831_tech.pdf
