Upper left button stopped working properly

My upper left button on the back (programmed to change ISO) stopped responding (most of the time). I shut the camera on and off, no change. I reprogrammed the button to a different feature, no change. I did not try factory reset. Looks like a loose connection. Anybody had a similar problem with a button? Only got the cam about 4 weeks ago. Guess I need to ship it to Solms.

Are you trying to use it with the EVF active? If so, the upper left button is disabled in the default setup when the EVF is active. You can enable it by going to Setup > Customize Controls and scrolling to the bottom of the list there ... I can't recall the name of the function immediately but it's pretty obvious.

It wouldn't be something about pressing buttons with the nose?

Checked it and left upper button pressed when on only EVF active the ISO comes on the screen together with the EVF view.

No problem I'm used to it.

Sorry, but I don't understand what you meant to say.

I believe the default locks out the Upper-Left button from operating with when the EVF is active to help eliminate erroneous presses with nose or fingers, yes. It's somewhat clumsy to reach the UL button when the camera is up to your eye if you're a right-eyed person; I guess they felt they could prevent inadvertent settings changes by making the menu system switch-in and whatever long-press you assign to it active only when viewing via the LCD.

Since there are no menu settings that affect just the EVF such that I need to be looking through the EVF to see their effects, and I wouldn't assign anything critical when looking through the camera to the position under the tip of my nose anyway, I leave my camera set to the default. My long-press assignment for the UL button is the Drive Mode set of commands, which I almost never change.

Thank you, ramarren, that was the problem, don't know how that setting was changed. Glad it was not a mechanical problem. (it is in the live view menu)

Setup > Customize Control > Menu Access in EVF is what I see (now that I'm at my desk and have the camera in my hands... :-). It's an on/off toggle, so I can imagine tapping it accidentally.

The button I have accidentally knocked a couple of times is the live view button, which then switches live view to video mode. You then wonder why nothing is working properly, until you spot the sound level meters flickering and realise what you have done  :)

Me too.

I have that button set up as a long press to call up the menu to select from my 4 profiles. Sometimes I press it too quickly...

Regards

Peter

Yep, that was the first thing that caught me out when I acquired my SL a couple of weeks ago.  I initially thought I had a dud, and couldn't understand what on earth was going on, but of course the only dud was me.

As my old physics teacher used to say "RTI" (Read the Instructions).....or in less polite citcles RTFI.

That one is not a problem to me because I find the Live View mode button hard to reach. I've not hit it by accident; I basically have to either twist my hand oddly to get to it with my forefinger or reach up with my thumb to get to it.

I have it programmed to access the exposure bracketing configuration controls with a long press. I only rarely change them.

Because I am missing the final 1/2" of my right index finger, I have put a transparent 3M Bumpons on the front button, the LV still/video button and the shutter release to make pressing these easier. I have programmed a long press on the front button to drive mode and the LV button to EV adjustment. I do use the LV button a fair bit for EV adjustment and before I got a remote release, I was using the drive mode a fair bit to access the 2 second release. I can in consequence bump the LV button but now I have got used to checking for the sound meters, it is no longer a problem.
