You are a very interesting person. I hope your life brings you many blessings and joy. Good luck with your photographic and photo gear adventures. Remember to keep it all in perspective

Should we start a pool on which lens you will buy first?

Only the diopter adjustment, of course, not the VF.  The S is OVF; the SL is EVF....different species.

Jeff

Okay I didn't know that

No need...........if I can get my eyes/glasses sorted to where I can see that focus patch (funny I never have any issues seeing other patches) I will buy it all at the same time :)

Things have gone tits up out here in Nigeria, and the rig I am babysitting on is away to run out of fuel.........so it looks like we are going to get evacuated out of here in the morning.........with or without lights

If you don't here back for a few days you will know why :(

"Working out what sort of photography works for you" speaks more of a love of cameras, or of the process of using them, and then looking for a subject or method that accommodates that. It is the opposite of my ideal.

While that may be true, I was specifically (I thought) avoiding "looking for a subject or method". In fact, that's exactly the photography I avoid.

Let me put this another way. I'm not a photographer looking for a picture, or for a use of the equipment I have. I know there are many who are, but that doesn't work for me. Photography clubs and photographic outings don't work for me, really. MarkP and I went for a walk in Sydney a few months ago and more than anything it was an opportunity to meet some one I like and go for a walk. Both very pleasant. The photos interesting, but lacking the obvious inspiration on my part. Perhaps there are better photographers about!

I'm not being critical of those who do photograph in this way, just saying it's not for me. I prefer to carry a camera with me when I do things I enjoy. Having said that, there are photographic ideas I wish to explore (night photography) where I intend to head out to pursue an idea.

What this means in terms of equipment is that for most photography the compact rangefinder M cameras work for me, but not for all situations. The SL enables me to photograph other activities where the M isn't suitable.

Granted, the Leica cameras and lenses are beautifully made, but that doesn't really inspire my photography ...

A very interesting discussion, lately I've also found myself getting back to basics. Last year I decided to simplify things, photographically, and also got fed up with all this stuff lying around. It probably also has something to do with being 2 years short of  60 and achieving grumpy old man status....offloaded all my Hasselblad MF gear, a couple of Leicas along with a pile of M and R lenses, about 25 to 30 kgs worth of equipment in total. I've kept the Monochrom and 4 M lenses.

Neil-  to bring this discussion back on track, I feel for you! I've been operating and guiding photographic safaris all over East and Southern Africa for the past 40 years. At times I've just about needed a team of porters to lug all the gear around.

For safaris I now use a Sony A7r with either the 105-280mm Vario-Elmar or the 280mm f4 APO-Telyt.

Walking safaris- Gorilla and Chimpanzee trekking, I use the Sony A7r & 28-90mm Vario-Elmarit. There's no way I could have hiked 3 or 4 kms up into the mountains and jungle at Mahale in Tanzania tracking chimpanzees, lugging all the dead weight around. The A7r and 28-90mm Vario-Elmarit were perfect. You're also photographing the Chimpanzees at very close quarters. I've used an M9 and 50mm Summilux for this on previous occasions.

Have look here: http://michali.zenfolio.com/p862924381

As for a light walkabout travel camera, my wife looked at the Leica Q but decided it was too expensive, she opted for the Fuji X-100T; set it up correctly and it's a fantastic little camera.

BYTW great predator shots from Tanzania. I think that your leopard in the tree is outstanding! Serengeti?

Best,

Mike

Hi Mike,

I here ya.  There seems to be a confluence of events at this time of my life that have me in much the same place.

Some of it has to do with being at a point in my life that I just don't want all of the baggage.

Most of it has to do with the state of the technology is allowing me to concentrate more on taking pictures and less on the restraints of the equipment.  Currently, digital cameras don't have much that distracts us from doing what we want, creatively and technically.

I believe you have a good plan for your type of shooting.  I have about the exact kit except the light walkabout travel camera is the RX1.

Your monkey photos are really great and you did it with the 50/1.4 and the M9!

And, while on this, Neil, once again I really like your website too.  Just get the M and a 50 APO and I'm sure you will be able to work around the RF/eyesight issues.  Like the rest of us, you like M shooting and you have all the other support cameras to work with.

Rick

An oil rig running out of fuel is rather poetic ........

Despite all you have said if you want a stonkingly good versatile little camera I would not discount the Q .......

I thought the 28mm lens limit would be an issue but  it didn't turn out to be at all ...... image quality is unparalleled and it is a joy to use...... I suggest you give one a try ....

Discounting the S ...... which I have not tried and you have dumped ..... the SL and the Q are Leica's best cameras to date in terms of flexibility, usability and image quality.

He didn't dump the S.....maybe a lesson learned from his quick dumping of the M.

ps. the current Q photos being posted are probably the most prolific and best being shown anywhere on the forum ....... that says a lot ......

28mm is not my cup of tea

Theres no mention of me dumping the S I still have it and have no intention of dumping it..........thats my "sit on the back seat of the car camera" and stop take a picture with it as the opportunities arise :)

You're too funny, Neil....after all that, you buy an EVF camera...

Wouldn't it make sense to try an M again (even to rent or buy used)...to determine if the current version is really satisfactory once everything is aligned (and you get more practice) before already waiting for the new toy...err, tool?

None of my business....but entertaining nonetheless...

Jeff

I still plan to do all the above when I get off the rig.........I have already organized to borrow a Leica M from the Leica store in KL when I get home and take it with me to my optician and see if we can get that patch sharp.......the Q is going to take care of my immediate want for a small walk about camera. :) :)

Later

Neil
