Q lens issue

I noticed today that the autofocus was hunting to lock on.  Every shot was perfectly focused.  Later, I discovered a rattle in the lens barrel.  There is no rattle when focusing manually.  I am at the end of week one of a four week holiday and the Q (bought for the holiday) is my only piece of kit.  I can live with the issue and continue to focus manually.  The camera will be sent in when I return home.  I wondered whether anyone else has had this issue.  The camera has not been knocked but has had a lot of use.  Apart from the lining of the lens cover peeling off, the Q has been faultless.

Suppose you did reset it?

If not try to put settings as it came.

The loning of the lens cap is a problem almost everyone has, I sent mine to Leica and the replacement is arrived to the store, I am travelling now sbut will pick it within a little forthnight. On the phone the store told me the lining is diferent.

you can find more about this issue here: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/249522-q-lens-cap-problem/

If you are in AF-C mode (continuous auto focus ) then you will see the image moving in and out slightly when you half press the shutter and this is totally normal. Try setting to Af-S and see what happens. The rattling noise is also normal under certain conditions and is to do with the OIS system and as said above normally isn't heard when switched on but you can sometimes hear it slightly when OIS is enabled

Thank you for your helpful responses.  I have done the full factory reset and the rattle has gone while the camera is switched on in both single shot and continuous mode.  When the camera is switched off, I can hear the rattle.  It is probably an issue with the image stabilisation.  I am confident there was no rattle a couple of days ago and the camera should not need to be reset.  I will report the issue to Leica when I return home.  I had an issue with a Canon IS L series zoom many years ago.  The lens was out of warranty and an internal optic had become scratched by a loose screw and was going to cost a fortune to be replaced.  The lens became an expensive paperweight.  Nothing should ever rattle in a lens barrel.

There is a slight rattling when the camera is off due to the image stabilization built into the lens. There is a floating lens element that is supported electro-magnetically. This system draws power from the battery so it shouldn't rattle when you have the camera on.

The rattle when the camera is off is totally normal for the Q and has been covered extensively  in previous topics and really is nothing to worry about. If I take my old Panasonic LX4 and shake it about when off you can hear the OIS mechanism rattling about, turn it on and it goes away. The OIS mechanism in the Q has been developed by Panasonic so this is what happens with their design. Really I would relax and enjoy the camera

Just checked mine .... bought new in December. When switched off there is a significant rattle from the lens, when switched on it is still there but much subdued, but still noticeable!

Makes no difference if the OIS is switched on or off .... just the same.

What does concern me is that I do a lot of motorcycle touring. The Q will be in a padded LowePro Adventure TLZ 20 II bag carried in a pannier. That lens will be rattling internally all the time I'm travelling .... now that can't be good for it  :o

I have had mine since the cameras release in June and have carried it and used it nearly every day and it's been bumped around in the top box of my old BMW R1100R. It has rattled since day one and still works perfectly. Please I wouldn't really worry about this as it is just the way it is designed.

FWIW I've been carrying image stabilized lens in the tail pack of a motorcycle for almost a dozen years.  I haven't had any issues to date.   That includes miles of off road rides, too.  The Q has only been in the tail pack since I received in in October.  I'm no more worried about it than I am of any other camera/lens.

Hi folks,

similar discussion was/is in the german section.

The rattle is sure normal, I recognised it also.

The idea that there is abrasion inside the lens is comprehensive, but cannot be a fact, I think these OIS Systems are well-established since years.

And abraison would show the Q is a malconstruction! I cannot think about that.

A question to viramati -

where did you get the information that the Q OIS is made by Panasonic? I know the OIS from Pana are very good, and when Leica and Panasonic work together it can be true that Leica put some technical parts into their Q design. But was there a report or so about this - or is it a "rumor"?

Just for my interest.

Greetings

Thom

Nearly everything inside the Q is Panasonic, so why not the OIS?

Eek! Faux Leica! ;-)

I know you agree with me on this, but for sake of stating it out loud.. Doesn't matter if it was designed by martians on the moon. The camera & it's systems work great and it's fun to use.

And it's OIS rattles by design and we shouldn't worry about it!
