If there's to be a new M, what features would you want?

Just wondering, sort of out loud....

With many rumours of a new M supposedly on the drawing board or in the works what would you want in a new or updated M?

For me the prime wish would be to have the camera slimmed down, down to M9 size at least.

My M9 and MM1 are the ideal camera size, perfect hand hold camera like their film counterparts. If that could be done while improving the battery life that body size that would be great.

No video.

I'm ok with the M9 size LCD

Don't really need LiveView either.

An improved M240 style OVF, no EVF.

A quieter shutter.

I guess for me what it boils down to is an improved M9 without the gain in girth. I'd probably be dead happy if some third party manufacturer could come out with a better capacity battery for the M9!

There's other niggly things on my wish list, but I will throw this out to the forum to see what you'd all like to have in the next version, if there is to be one, of the M.

What you're after already appears to exist in the form of the M 262 - no EVF, no video and better battery life than the M9.

I don't think there's actually much difference in the dimensions between the M9 and the M240.  The 240 just looks fatter because of the thumbwheel.

yes, well sort of Mark but the number one "wish" for me would be a slimmer body on a new M, again M9 in size. I have a 240, ( as well as a M9 and a MM1 ), and have handled the 262 and I know the actual dimensions may say that there's little difference but I for one feel that the later M's are too "fat" for my taste. Personal I know, but there you are...

I honestly can't think of anything Leica could add (and certainly not subtract) from the M240 that would compel me to sell/trade up.   The only two things that compelled me to go from the M9 were the sensor glass issues (now apparently solved) and the recocking noise.  The slight variation in grip ergonomics caused by the thumb wheel does make the M240 feel a tad fatter to me but I quickly adjusted to it.  As I adjusted to the loss of the preview lever, which I no longer miss.

I have come to appreciate the versatility offered by the EVF and wouldn't want to do without it now.   I only use it occasionally but when I do I'm glad it's there.

I would like it if they made the frame lines less glaringly bright, or if I could adjust the upper limit in a menu item as can be done with the LCD brightness.  But it really wouldn't be something that would make me take the money hit to upgrade.

Bocaburger, I'll bet Leica will introduce adjustable and a better automatic frame brightness. It is a natural now that you mention it. (Isn't that the way it goes - the best idea is the simplest?) Thanks! Gosh, I wish I could choose what frame lines to show to reduce clutter to one lens. Again, it seems a natural.

They could use natural light to automatically back illuminate the frame lines  ;)

I've given it some thought and honestly, the only thing I would like in a new M (besides say, an even newer, better sensor) is spot metering in Classic mode.

The center weighted metering is so easily fooled by backlighting! Advanced is great, but chews through more battery and is slower.
