Received my RRS plate for the SL.

The Leica Motor-Drive R8/R9 hand-strap fits perfectly the SL + RRS plate.

But, it the first time that I put a hand-strap on the SL and I found it very uncomfortable.

It makes it difficult to reach the shutter release.

To be comfortable the SL shutter release should be on the front of the handgrip instead of being on the top.

The ergonomic of the R8/R9 + motor drive was much better in this respect.

I don't see the SL + battery grip and hand-strap being much more comfortable for the same reason.

I am going back to the neck-strap.

I have the RRS in hand and have taken some pictures.  Please excuse quality and apparent dirtiness of my screen.  Left eyed and nose smudges are constant problem.

Fit and finish are impeccable as expected from RRS.  Battery is fully accessible so no need to remove it once it is on.   But it does add some bulk so I will likely not leave the QR on all the time but when I am intending to use a tripod it surely will be of help.   I was not happy with the generic solutions.

Is there an additional screw thread at the bottom?

I changed my mind.  ;)

I have loosened the hand strap and it is much better, but not perfect.

l can see that a handstrap with the new RRS plate would be uncomfortable because of the position of the lower lug at one end of the body. l have the smaller generic RRS plate which has a lug much closer to the centre of the body. This allows more play in the strap on your hand. l've used this with the Herringbone strap for several months now, and find it very comfortable and secure. Because I'm paranoid, l regularly check the leather isn't wearing through on the lugs, but no problem so far.

Are you using a lens ring with adaptor to orients horizontally? Can one use  RRS L base plate to  fit in BH 55 LR head.

I am considering purchasing this set up.

Thanks

Syd

The answer to the first question is no, though the SL 90-280 lens itself incorporates a rotating tripod mount.

I can't answer your second question, but I assume you can

OTOH I would probably get the new Novoflex rotating ring mount for the SL24-90 if this was important to me. L mounts add too much bulk for my liking.

The picture in post #47 above and the picture bellow show you exactly that :

The SL equipped with the RRS BSL plate specially made for the SL attached on a RRS BH55 LR.

It works also with the RRS generic L plate : the MC-L.

The three main differences between the two available RRS L plates on the SL are :

- on the BSL, the vertical part of the L is optional.

- on the BSL there is a place to attach an hand strap.

- on the BSL there are marks to center perfectly the sensor on the ball head.

It is the Really Right Stuff B9 plate .

The B9 is small and light plate, but it has an anti-twist flange and bi-diretional dovetails which is making it strong and useful.

You can also use it directly on the SL.

The part connecting the RRS plate to the Leica R Adapter M is removable.

It is part of the Leica R Adapter M set.

The problem is that this tripod mount is fixed. It doesn't turn around the lens adapter.

You have to turn all the camera and lens like on the picture bellow for vertical framing.

That's why a L Plate is better.

For lenses like the SL 90-280, R 70-180, R 105-280, 280/4, 280/2,8 etc.. which have a movable tripod mount,  I find it better to use  a Sidekick or a Gimbal.

Thanks, you save me some money by having me  order right the  plate and other stuff.
