Apo-Summicron 50mm Summary

Hi Folks

I have recently purchased an Apo-Summicron 50 mm, I could not afford it and basically spent no money for 4 months to buy it, only because it was at such a good price that it would have been crazy not to. It has never been on a camera ever. It will join my much loved Summilux 35 mm, waiting in a box until a camera appears, or I have to sell it if any more surprises come along.

I have no Leica M camera at the moment, I had to sell it as the first half of this year has been fraught with unprecedented difficulties, medical problems in the family and unexpected expenses. I eagerly await the end of this year, when, with a bottle of cheap champagne from Aldi, I will heartily wish this year good riddance and would love to give it a singular, good kick straight between the eyes and below the belt. It has been nothing but a swim in raging flood waters barely keeping my families head above water. Whatever good I thought came my way, turned out to be a niggling costly, thorn.

I therefore totally expect that my good fortune with regards to the Apo-Summicron 50 mm, WILL be balanced by my discovering FLARE on this lens.

I would therefore kindly ask if somebody could summarise the status of this lens.

1) what is the standard method for discovering if the flare exists on the lens?

2) what is the actual cause of the flare?

3) has this flare problem been resolved and if so when

4) can somebody please confirm that serial numbers are no indicator for the likelihood of getting a bad lens?

5) can somebody please advise what lens filter I can screw onto the front and keep it there permanently so that I never scratch the Leica front glass.

Also

4) is there a Leica M user in Newcastle, NSW, Australia  or nearby who would be kind enough to test if my lens has the glare issue as I have no M camera at the moment? Now I am not suspicious or anything like that, usually, however I would really prefer if we could test this next year in 2016.

5) if anybody is thinking of parting with their MM or M240 in the next months please let me know

Hi M28.  I live in Sydney.  Happy to meet and test & compare the lens to my APO-Summicron (flare free after some dramas - see below).  However, I think that there is a bit of Novocastrian insanity buying a 50 APO-Summicron with nothing to mount it on whilst having such personal and financial difficulties  .  I'm not yet ready to part with the Monochrome v1 or M240 but things may change.

This thread and my post (http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/246633-apo-50mm-summicron-flare-issue/?p=2875749) covers much of what you're asking.

Regards,

Mark

hi M28

your lonely APO 50 deserves a good companion, and the M Monochrom v1 is certainly one of the best.   you can have mine if you want it, but i'm afraid that we're on opposite hemispheres and that customs at your end will impact your landed cost.

greetings from hamburg

rick

ps.   i sent the serial number of my 50 APO to customer service in wetzlar, and received their confirmation by return that my unit had been tested and was not affected.    worth an email on your part to ask?

M28... nice glass but why buy and not use? here in the UK a well used beater M3 can be had for for a few hundred quid or an M mount camera from a lesser brand for even less - why not buy one and try your lens(es) for yourself... there is more to life than the MM and M240 - if the images the lens(es) deliver for you are what you want why worry what others think? life is too short to worry about what others (many are armchair experts) think... happy shooting

And if you don't want to deal with film, an M8 or beater M9 isn't too expensive, or even a first-gen Sony A7 with an adapter.

I wish you the best with all of your tribulations. Illness can take the fun out of a lot of things. Been there.

Buying a lens without a camera is like buying a car and not having any gas. Great to look at, but...

I got a "deal" on the one I bought back in September. I'm wondering, since I've only shot it on an M and a v.1 MM,

is this. Is the Apo overkill for a film Leica? I'm thinking of resolution. Works fine on my digitals but haven't done anything

on film yet.

Again, hope your new year brings more fortune for you.
