Soft key settings?

I would be interested in how people have set up their soft key settings.

The default setting is:

FN - Graycard

LV - Exposure Compensation

TR - Focus Mode

BR - Load Profile

TL -ISO

BL - White Balance

I'm still experimenting, but here is what I have decided for the moment:

FN - Graycard

LV - Exposure Metering

TR - Exposure Compensation

BR - ISO

TL - Drive Mode

BL - Focus Mode

I'd be very interested to know what others have set up.

I've been juggling things around quite a bit. This is feeling comfortable now:

Button (short press) :: Long press

TL (menu) :: Drive mode

BL (magnification) :: Exposure pattern

TR (review) :: Exposure Compensation

BR (view overlay) :: ISO

LV (still/video mode switch) :: Exposure bracketing

FN (normal/aperture/exposure simulation) :: Lens Profiles

I have these settings encapsulated into a User Profile named "RLens".

FN - grey card

LV - drive mode

TR - exposure compensation

BR - exposure bracketing (for HDR)

TL - ISO

BL - WB (though I don't use it - I've run out of useful things I can put on buttons)

I don't have an AF lens, which affects my choices.

As with other cameras I've had, I set up custom profiles at the start, but after a few weeks of familiarisation I find it quicker to make settings directly, and forget the profiles.

Hi -very good idea! My settings are:

TL - ISO

TR - Focus Mode

BL - Bracketing

BR - AF Mode

FN - Exposure Compensation (=very easy with ring finger and thumb own the wheel)

LV - Drive Mode

I use many M- and R-Lenses, but also the SL 24-90 Zoom

Best regards

Lik

TL  - ISO

BL - White Balance

TR - OIS on/off

BR - Load Profiles

FN - Exp Comp

LV - Exp Metering Method

Profiles are:

Auto (everything - for use with the 24-90)

Timer - so I don't have to fiddle about in the Drive menu

HDR - 3 shots bracketed with fixed iso, WB and timer .... I usually only use it with tripod/static camera

Manual - separate set of parameters for using just manual lenses

Having quick direct access to these (auto and manual in particular) via a soft key allows me to reset everything back to 'normal' in one go rather than have to undo any temporary alterations piecemeal.

You can effectively access the 'grey card' setting from the WB slider so I ignored that option.

Drive mode is top of my list of favourites so that just takes a single press and a quick scroll to get continuous shooting ....... focus mode is second .... but I hardly ever use these.

With the above set, the only time I have to access the menus is to activate WLAN if I want to take pics remotely with my iphone/ipad.

I think this set-up will stick ...... I haven't changed it now for several weeks.

Didn't mention it up above, but my settings have all been for use with the Leica R lenses—I haven't yet used the SL's native 24-90 very much other than to test things, and have only put M lenses on the camera a couple of times for a test shot too. This camera works and feels so balanced with R lenses... :-)

I use the User Profiles to store starting point setups for the major ways I'll use the camera. So far I've made "RLens" for my standard R lens use and "SWC" for the way I like the camera set up when I'm in the 'square shooting, faux Hasselblad' frame of mind. (My Hassy kit is an SWC and a 500CM with three lenses—I can replicate the FoVs with the R 15mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 60mm lenses.  B)) Once I'm in a particular use frame of mind, I made other settings on the fly; the User Profiles just give me an easy way to get back to a known starting point.

When I finally start using the 24-90, I'll probably juggle things around a bit again to accommodate the AF capabilities and set up another User Profile for "SLlns".

  • 8 months later...

Any new suggestions ? Or do you all still stick to the choice made in December ?

Maybe you use now different settings for different user modes ?   (Manual lenses (R+M); AF lens with "AF on shutter button"; AF lens with MF ("AF on joystick") , etc.)

Actually mine have changed completely. As of today I have...

TL: White Balance

TR: ISO

BL: Exposure Compensation

BR: Flash FEC

Live View: Load Profile

Front: Grey Card

I'm currently playing with the settings I might want for different profiles but I'm not there yet.

The reasons for the big changes are that EC was enabled with the dial in auto modes. TTL flash got mostly fixed. I got the AF lenses.

I really like having shutter speed, Aperture and ISO (or setting EC and ISO) plus FEC available without having to take my eye from the viewfinder.

I haven't juggled things around much, my setup from December 2015 continues to work well for me. In all cases, I've enabled direct EC. Current settings differ just a little and there are more User Profiles now:

Button (short press) :: Long press
TL (menu) :: Drive mode
BL (magnification) :: Exposure pattern
TR (review) :: Exposure Compensation
BR (view overlay) :: ISO
LV (still/video mode switch) :: Exposure bracketing
FN (normal/aperture/exposure simulation) :: Lens Profiles
video (disabled) :: User Profiles

I have these settings encapsulated into a User Profile named "RLens", DNG only at the full frame format and default R lens set to Summilux-R 50mm.

The same settings swapped over to 1:1 format, B&W rendering with +1 contrast for JPEGs, and default lens profile set to Super-Elmar-R 15mm are in a User Profile named "SWC".

The same basic settings in RLens are also used in two additional user profiles for the SL24-90 lens. One of them has the toggle button set to do AF and the lens set to MF ("SLensM"). The other has the lens set to AF and the toggle button set to AE-Lock ("SLLensA").

can the button left key moderate magnification be assigned to another button? I feel with M lenses magnification is too high.

Unfortunately, no: the intermediate magnification is only available on the lower left button. The toggle button only allows full or no magnification.
