toyfel Posted December 14, 2015 Share #41 Posted December 14, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Question about the focus magnification with firmware 1.2 with manual lenses (R and M), does it work like this - 1 - Use the joy stick to move / position the focus magnification box 2 - Press the joy stick to toggle max magnification 3 - Use joy stick to move around the magnified view (if needed) 4 - Half press shutter release to return normal view Also, if going in and out of the magnified view repetitively, does the SL remember where the selection box was last positioned? Thank you. Pressing the joystick once get you into 100% mag view with the magnifier placed at centre position. You can then use the joystick to move the magnifier in any direction you want. Clicking the joystick again will get you back to normal view (that means there is no other magnification than 100% available). The position of the magnifier is not remembered by the camera. Pressing the joystick will always place the magnifier in centre postion

wlaidlaw Posted December 14, 2015 Author Share #43 Posted December 14, 2015 New firmware loaded smoothly and the joystick magnification is the making of an excellent camera into a great camera to my mind. I can now mag and de-mag without taking my hand off the focus ring so ergonomically that's a pure winner and my 80 Lux and other lenses will appreciate it. The speed of magnification is virtually immediate, ie no discernible lag, which is a massive bonus too. I hardly ever half-mag so for my purposes I won't miss it and if I did I could still use the BR button. Pete. I agree having been taking photos at a kids play today with a Noctilux on the SL (flashes not allowed quite reasonably). What I was struggling with was stage lighting, which came out rather magenta and it has been quite difficult to reset with an eyedropper, without getting skin tones very wrong. The joystick zoom is absolutely great. Did not use peaking but did not miss it at all. Wilson

That's a case where I'd want to have a snap of the Xrite Color Checker from which to generate a custom color profile. Stage lighting is always just a pain on color accuracy. Stage lighting is always just a pain on color accuracy. You would have needed the swatch chart in the background or a big greyscale patch. The lighting kept going from green to pink to mauve. I am not sure any WB would have coped. Wilson Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Stage lighting is always just a pain on color accuracy. I suspect it would have made little difference. Mixed lighting in stage production is mixed lighting. The best you can often hope for is good skin colour on the key people, and let the rest fall as it will. That's why so much performance photography is B&W. wlaidlaw Posted December 14, 2015 Author Share #49 Posted December 14, 2015 Thumbs up for the joystick fix in FW1.2! I would not have had a hope at getting the shots all at f1.4 or f2 if the mag was still at BL. I was using the joystick to check focus about every 5 or 6 shots. Makes it a pleasure to use. It is going to be great for T-S lenses. Wilson
thighslapper Posted December 14, 2015 Share #50 Posted December 14, 2015 Nice to see everything now works as it should .... thumbs up for Leica implementing things so quickly (for them anyway). With the eye of faith the EVF seems better in low light ........ After plenty of grumbling about MF and the button positions I wonder if LCT has now placed an order ...... scott kirkpatrick Posted December 14, 2015 Share #52 Posted December 14, 2015 I think there will be lots more to come. This upgrade fixed some really big problems. The log-C bug was a really big embarrassment for their video customers, whose cost tolerance makes us look like pikers. Now we need to make lists and check off the little things, like making sure that all M and R lenses perform as they should. scott
Nick Rains Posted December 14, 2015 Share #53 Posted December 14, 2015 Just updated the FW without issues and bunged an 18mm Super-Elmar on. The joystick magnify function is excellent. Pity it does not remember it's position each time - would be good for off centre portraits. Am I seeing things or is the focus peaking better? The FP on the M(240) using the 18mm is very vague indeed. Now on the SL it's really quite distinct but now I have updated to 1.2 I can't compare to what it was before. An option to remember the focus assist position would be nice. Was a bit of a pain yesterday having to constantly move the point back to the same spot.
